By Cut Chemist & Shortkut...

Now admittedly there is only one idea/loop in this that is
really good and the vocal about the bands from the periodic
table is just padding (and in spite of this it's still too
short), but this is an absolutely fantastic track. Some of
the most "listenable" turntabilism, even moreso than the
X-ecutioners IMO.

Has no one heard the track? Where's Titsworth when you need
him... :)

I've heard it.

I can't really remember it, nor can I remember being
particularly impressed by it. I'm still yet to hear a decent
track made by a turntablist (in the strictest sense of the
word, Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike etc).

Yes, that's whats so good about this, it's actually a good
track rather than just being technically impressive...

such sacrilege..

*strips you of your avatar*

turntablism isn't classic songwriting but it sure ain't
garbage either

Hehe maybe I deserved that.

Seriously nothing against DJs as a whole.

But I have Wave Twisters (the album) by Q-Bert, and I like
about 5 seconds on the whole thing. I love turntablism as an
art, I have the utmost respect for turntablists and
everything but this album (and I can safely say most other
albums of this kind) is so boring. IMO.

turntablist have yet to properly create a scratch that
creates an emotional response. they can create awe, with
either speed or skill (or both), but could never rival an
orchestra or even a polysynth! shame really. the turntable
is a suplementary instrument, which cant really lead a song.
dont get me wrong, im a tablist myself, granted im not
qbert, but have you ever heard a scratch that made you feel
a deep emotion?

"turntablist have yet to properly create a scratch that
creates an emotional response" that's unfair.. even coming
from a fan and practicioner that's like saying "i've never
heard a good country song, they must not exist"

"have you ever heard a scratch that made you feel a deep
emotion?"

yep. dj shadow's endtroducing is full of them (and yes i
mean the scratches). plenty of dj's can do this, in
instrumental and vocal hip-hop.

im not saying that scratching is rubbish or anything like
that, but ive even read an interview with qbert where he
says it would be better if someone could create a scratch
which could create an emotional response. on that album
(entroducing)for example lots of it is from the samples and
things used, not specifically the scratch technique used.
for example using the generic aaaahhh sample in place of
some others, the effect would be lost.

I hope you get what im trying to say. kid koala kinda gets
the closest, but i dont think a turntable could really rival
some other instruments in that respect, but its not a
traditional chromatic instrument, it can however do things
schuuuuuuuwp-wip-weeep-weoouuuu-wikiwikiwiki-whaaaaa-wooooo
that synths couldnt, like. ooooo-wiwiwiwiwiwiwihaaaaa. (say
it out loud perhaps):)

i own entroducing and some of the stuff is good on it, but i
think you will find that scratches cannot cover the whole
spectrum of emotions, that other instruments could do.

while im moaning about turntables, one of the things that
annoys me is i cant play chords on my decks, theyre
essentially monophonic. doh!

basically what they do, they do best, and what they dont do,
they sort-of do, but not very well. okay?!

i know what you mean and in some cases i agree it's the
source/sound used, but i think in many songs like "napalm
brain", "midnight", and the "WDYSLL?" tracks shadow DOES use
a scratch technique that emotionally resonnates.. we can
agree to disagree though. btw i almost used kid koala as
another example.. he's great

for the record i think the turntable is a very cold
instrument because it's not even meant to be one (and yep
they're monophonic! very limited range for sure.. hehe, no
range more like it).. but i still think there're a select
few who can do really human things with it, not just show
off. hey have you ever seen cut chemist and nu-mark put
violin and cello bows to the turntable.. they do some pretty
ka-razy stuff live.
