This is what happened (you can probably skip this
paragraph):
I downloaded Flash Mx and then I downloaded a 'crack' for it
off of Kazaa. I ran the crack, but then my mouse click
behavior was wierd; I couldn't open any files. So I decided
to restart, and the mouse clicks wouldn't even restart the
computer so I turned it off, and it would just sit at the
Windows XP screen. No matter what I did (SafeMode, Restart
from last known working configuration) nothing would load up
windows. I almost threw my laptop out of the window, but
instead I took a long walk.

I couldn't re-install windows XP, so luckily I had a Win 98
startup floppy, and installed Windows 98, and from Windows
98, I was able to run the Windows XP install program which
detected that Windows XP was corrupted and needed
repairing.

So now, I have both 98 and XP installed; how do I uninstall
Windows 98? Is it best to just shift-delete the whole folder
it's in? Will it leave unneeded shit behind? Any info would
be great, thanks.

I suggest 2 things:
1: Get rid of windows98, deleting the folder should do the
job, or...
2: Get rid of windows

If you installed Windows XP as an update to Windows 98 you
have to let XP remove the files. If you have them as two
seperate installations then you should be able to just
delete the folder, but obviously there can be no guaratees
:O...at least it keeps life interesting.

It does sound like a virus though...so you might be better
backing up any important files while you can and
reformatting the computer, doing a fresh install then virus
checking you backup information before you copy onto the new
install.

Yeah, I didn't install XP as an update to 98; I did a new
installation. So I'll just be deleting 98 then. Thanks.

Hmm, it still asks if I want to load Windows XP or Windows
98 se when I turn on the computer, any ideas on how to make
it so it doesn't ask that?

I'll probably just get some CD-Rs tomorrow and backup and
reformat anyways.

Go into the Start menu, choose Run and type msconfig into
the box.

Choose the BOOT.INI tab and under the bit where it has
[operating systems] remove the line that refers to the old
Win 98 install.

You're a genius.

But I can't remove that line for some reason

Click on Check All Boot Paths.

If you have deleted the Windows 98 folder it should
automatically remove the line for you :)

Yeah, tried that, but it still says all paths are valid for
some strange reason. Stupid windows.

Heh, you should work in tech support; or do you already?

hate shit to autostart.

Go into the Start menu, choose run and type in cmd and press
return

type in copy c:\boot.ini c:\boot.ini.bak press return
then type in edit c:\boot.ini

Remove the line from there, make sure the default path is
correct and save. That should work.
