sad vs. happy

following thought came on my mind while driving home today
(thats right, i think sometimes hehe)

i went shopping, and i bought latest tindersticks album
(which somehow i forgot about, but luckly ophecks reminded
me of it yesterday) and was listening to it while driving
home and it is really beautiful music, but it has that
certain melanholic, sad, touch to it. and i was thinking why
am i always (mostly) buying this melanholic music, films
(other stuff i bought today: cd - the walkabouts/trail of
stairs, dvd's:koyaanisqatsi, powaqqatsi, insomnia (the
original version), and kaurismaki's "the man without the
past...everything pretty much with that same sad,
melancholic feel to it).

(i was thinking a little about this already a while ago,
when i was with some people and it was up to me to play the
music we were mostly listening as a background...anyway,
they said its all nice and beautiful music, but somehow they
find it depressing...and mind, i was playing all kinds of
music from electronica to rock but everything with that same
sad feel to it)

what is it about this melanholic art that i like so
much...why cant i enjoy the happy stuff the same way (there
are some exceptions ofcourse)?
is it easier to make GOOD sad/melanholic music,
films,...than a good happy/positive music, films, etc.?
is this just up to every individual and their mood and
perception?
and finally a little poll :) - what kind of stuff do you
prefer : sad or happy? :)

Chaotic music makes the adrenalin gushin shit hit the fan
with me .... prolly why i like Digital Hardcore music so
much ... and also why i get horney as hell to double
bass.......

there's so much more sadness to be expressed artistically
than happy go lucky shit.. it seems like the best way to
express happiness is with a smile, not artistically..

It's up to your perception and your mood on to what you
create.

I find that i tend towards both, but my music is quite tense
or meloncholy.

But i love some real happy tunes:

Roygbiv is one of my favorite tracks ever and it's a very
beautiful euphoric tune.

"there's so much more sadness to be expressed artistically
than happy go lucky shit"

another thought...nothing i hate more than to see a
director/music maker to try and create sad/melanholic stuff
and they have no idea of how to do that so they use bunch of
sterotyps and totally fuck up a piece and make it look funny
and stupid.
i remember, i once read an interview with one of our pop
stars and he said something like "i could go and create some
sad songs that would touch everyones heart and would make
the critics shut up (as they are not to fond of his music,
tho some stuff is pretty decent)"
but, im not sure if it is really that easy to make this sad
stuff...i mean most of this stuff i listen/watch to makes me
feel good somehow, but there is also plenty of artists doing
sad music/films which i just cant dig, some of it even makes
me depressed...

our local pop-star (jan plestenjak)
he makes decent music actually, but he's playing on his look
pretty much as well...its helping the sale figures a lot

i listen to sad when i'm sad and happy when i'm happy...
(yeah, rocket science isn't it ; )) sometimes happy when i'm
sad but it doesn't work that well...

anyway ~ i like some sad music (as long as it's most
abstract... à la f#a#infinity by Godspeed You Black
Emperor!, which is depressing but abstract so that's good...
unlike Mom & Dad by Frank Zappa for example), but i've come
to HATE sad stories (of any kind). i always get so sick when
characters i like die or something and all i want is to
erase the memory from my mind, but it stays whatever i
try... i hate it when the authors do that.

now i don't care anymore if a sad movie (for example...) is
a masterpiece or not, whenever it's depressing ~ i don't
want to see it.

(i was more "open-minded" towards sadness before but now i'm
just fed up with being sick with all that ' _ ')

did your mood change in any way since you stopped watching
depressing stuff?

i was thinking about this as well, but i always get kind of
scared of what i'd miss if i stopped watching/listening sad
stuff...

It's better to be sad if you're a tormented artist who
writes poetry in a weblog.

and it seems like all the happy music ultimately is just pop

99% of the music I listen to is ''sad'' or melancholic. So I
have no idea why I'm such a huge Beatles fan. They're about
the only consistently positive band I listen to on a regular
basis.

Happy = wimpy, nobody wants to be a wimp. You've got to be
an underground badass.

hmm, yeah, must be something wrong with me

for real, i watch comedies and i have great fun doing that
but its nothing memorable at the end...no beauty, its good
only for a good laugh (which is great), there are quite some
comedies that i liked a lot (dr.strangelove, everything by
coen brothers, tarantino's films + plenty more), but there's
way more melanholic beautiful films, and most of my movie
collection is sad stuff...

when it comes to music, i actually cant tell what would be
happy music, i guess everything appart from melanholic/sad,
so in that case i also like happy tunes, but again, the
majority is sad stuff

well...

i think peel session 1 by autechre is very emotional, i
listen to it alot again, only tracks 1 and 2 though, oddly
enough
good music should make you wanna cry
i can cry to any good music though, like really loud stuff
too

crybaby :)

i dont cry really, i remember last time i cried was about 15
years ago when my dog died
but some film scenes can bring a tear in my eye - it never
happens with music tho, i just get that great warm
feeling...

look, things are going better, i bought one not so sad cd
today (magnolia score) :) feeling happy already, tho i doubt
i'll be listening to it musch, its not as good as i though
it would be - well some songs are nice, but the rest is
quite boring, so perhaps its just a fact i like sad stuff
more...

im in a melancholic mood again...all this melanchlic stuff i
listen to, all these malancholic films i watch to...it's
just making me, umm, well melancholic :) it doesn't really
bother me, but im getting this feeling lately that i just
can't have proper fun anymore...i mean i can have fun with
people i can have fun watching comedies, but couple of hours
after the party or film i start feeling sad and melancholic
again...it just appears that im not a happy person for some
reason. thank god there's so many artists into melancholic
stuff hehe, at least i can enjoy that :)
