if you are looking for music programs that don't require any equipment, you should buy Reason. you can get it at:

all that realy diferentiates a laptop from a desktop computer (as far as music is comcerned) is that laptops don't have a joystick port, as you all know you conect a midi interface to you joystick port (well unless you're posh).
on a laptop you need a serial, paralel or usb midi interface, which all cost a bit more.
thats all you realy need to know. the same apps the same crashes.
if youve got usb then thats cool because you can just use usb midi and audio interfaces, otherwise youre pretty much stuck with your internal sound card and a serial or parallel midi interface.
unfortunately external midi interfaces aren't all that well suported by linux. not that linux has that many good music programs compared with windows or mac os9.
but i eventualy want to stop using my atari st with cubase, and use somthing running on my linux laptop, only because linux is very very stable.
put it this way: it crashes about as often as my sampler. which is about twice ever.
i have used mac and windows sequencers on occasion but i always ended going back to my atari because they crash too much.
perhaps i'm just fussy, but i like my sequencer to work with hardware like stability.
