On a scale on 1-10 how well does this text describe...

a) you?
b) IDM-fans in general?

"I is for intelligent.... D= dance... M is for muzak...
in other words... its pretentious elitist pseudo-house or
hip-hop music that people would never, ever actually dance
in a club if it was actually being played by the DJ. we are
better than you, whoever you are. most of the people here
still have their mommies cook them dinner and wash their
clothes. the typical listens to this genre through mp3s on
their computer, never actually even hearing the bass that
might attempt to shake your booty. most IDM-ers listen to
one mp3 from an album, then decide that it is the worse shit
they have ever heard, or the greatest thing since
microwaving food to death. most IDM-ers also have a porn
addiction."

i am not intelligent!
i am not dance!
i am not music!

i am not better than you either... what does it mean anyway
better? according to which standards?

"most of the people here still have their mommies cook
them dinner and wash their clothes."

> now i don't care whether it is true or not but i don't get
what's the point of this? in which way does it matters at
all when it comes to music, if you do the chores or if your
mother does them? : )

"the typical listens to this genre through mp3s on their
computer, never actually even hearing the bass that might
attempt to shake your booty"

> you dumb fuck. : P

i don't listen to music with my ass, i listen to it with my
ears.

and i have good headphones and a good sound quality... if
your PC configuration doesn't emit basses, consider changing
your equipment!

"most IDM-ers listen to one mp3 from an album, then
decide that it is the worse shit they have ever heard, or
the greatest thing since microwaving food to death"

> i agree with ONE thing off this: some people tend to
over-praise some music... well... if it ever means
anything.

"most IDM-ers also have a porn addiction."
> i don't think it has something to do with idm - rather
with being on a messageboard all the time. ; )

yup that seems to be me, except for the "listening to one
mp3 and then praising/trashing an entire album." o yeah, and
you wanna hear bass? listen to the system on my comp, i
literally have to turn the bass _down_ in both winamp and on
my mixer for most stuff to be even listenable! bah

a)2
b)3

I don't know where we got this reputation... most people
here like other sorts of music just as much... there are
loads of dnb and hip hop fans, people into classical music,
jazz, etc. I mean come on, we had a thread about Kylie's
latest track the other day and several people liked it.

This idea that we're all elitist idiots who stroke our chins
whilst listening to the latest ae imitating glitch act is a
bit off the mark to say the least.

And the comment about the the bass on mp3s is dim to say the
least. I listen to vinyl and cds through the same system as
my mp3s. Dunno what mp3s they've been listening to, but mine
certainly have bass in them... I can actually feel the floor
pulsing now. It's such a stupid argument really as if there
was no floor shaking bass (for dancing to in clubs) the
stanton final scratch (mp3DJing system) and traktor would
never be used in clubs. People do dance to IDM in clubs,
I've played Aphex Twin and FSOL and had the dance floor just
as full as when playing some mindless chart fodder.

I love it when fans of other genres, can write off our music
as souless noise, but if we criticise their genre (for
example, garage) it's due to elitism.

Personally, I find the drum and bass heads in Cardiff and
Bristol are a lot more up themselves than IDMers...
