*BREAK COMPETITION*

ok - someone else suggested this - but i will initialize
it

we are gonna be holding a small break contest - just make
your best 1 minute or less breakbeat/drum solo and submit it
- each participant can submit as many as they wish - but
please dont submit your life's work

we can decide about voting and whatnot later - lets just get
some breaks in here

what are 'breaks'?

fast, funky drum beats - think speedy funk music - vsnares
and similar artists use breaks often

i basically just mean complicated drum patterns - it doesnt
have to fit any particular style

Any other requirements?

does "break" mean taking any fairly short looped beat and
then "breaking' it into smaller bits and rearranging them?

here is my first acoustic entry - drums only
(completely sequenced in fruityloops)

and here is an example of my amen stylings in a
"remix" of sorts, of Handel's Messiah

no other requirements

w M w - i dont mean to refer to anything in particular - you
are free to whatever you want - if you wish to slice samples
you may

here is an example of my slicing skills on a
sample of the break squarepusher uses in Come on My Selector
- fitted to a digital rendition of a Sonata in C by Mozart

break competition:

some one uploads a break somewhere (not of their own making,
a found break like the amen, worm, apache etc.)

then people download it and see what they can do with it.
the person who's voted to have done the coolest, most
original thing with the break wins

your "first accoustic entry" track was interesting to see
how someone else fiddles around with stuff... it did seem
like something that a live drummer could almost play which
means it didn't really take advantage of the computer's
composition abilities ie. you could work at a finer grain of
time or make sure all the sounds end in time with the tempo
etc. also the mp3 was 35 seconds long with 30 seconds of
silence. My favorite complex drum track I've made is
probably "4rooms4walls (artificialselectionremix)" at
http://artists.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/wmw/ ... but for some
reason when I load iuma.com now there's no scroll bar to the
right...?? I'll make another one right now or fairly soon
too.

I suppose that his "first accoustic entry" could be used as
the break here then. Only drum sounds from that break can be
used and preferably in a drumish way, not changing it to
melody or something with miniature loops?

it was meant to sound like a real drummer - as it was for a
hardmetal band project i was working on

that sounds like a good idea

ok - lets try that out then, everyone takes my acoustic demo
and see what you can do with it.

imagine making a completely new track out of single grains
of another track which are chosen cos they resemble little
bits of a completely new track you just made... like those
posters of people made out of tiny pictures of other
things...

it would sound like complete shit.

offline w M w from London (United Kingdom) on 2003-10-09 18:30 [#00896519]
Points: 21454 Status: Regular

That's interesting but the reason I don't think that would
work steve is because we see light on a surface as two
dimensional and we percieve music in time as basically one
dimensional (ignoring that sound travels in 3-d space, it's
just that we can only recieve it one soundwave at a time and
then mentally assemble it in a single line (also ignoring we
have 2 ears that hear stuff in slightly different times
depending on where the sound is coming from))... so ...
there's much more space available in a picture for that to
work and we can see it all simultaneously at once to
assemble it all together.

ooh xltronic breaks competition, gives a new meaning to the
expression 'northern soul' (or 2 left feet..?)

enjoyable if there was some soul in this mathmatical
nonsense.

good to see some people are starting to submit breaks - and
i dont really care what people are using for their breaks -
so it wasnt really a decision i made- just an implication of
wMw's suggestion.

honestly people - whatever you want to submit is fine - as
long you are showcasing some break skills
