I'm listening to the wind and rain outside the window and
it shits on (very nearly) all music at the mo. So what's
your favourite (non-traditionally-musical) sound?

I love the sound of wood creaking

Like, in an old house, if you step on the floor wierd, it
goes errrrr

or like, the sound in a movie, with an old wooden ship, that
is buckling under the pressure... or just taking a peice of
wood, and putting pressure on it

dont know why...

oh, and when you take the eraser end of a mechanical pencil,
and turn it in the direction, that goes against the
spring... it makes this little clicking noise.

i love that too

- Seriously OLD 78rpm vinyl crackle
- The "bep-bede-bep-bede-bep" of mobile phone interference
- The clunk of searchlight switches in old films
- The tortured shrieking of the damned

One of those is not true.

yeah, but windchimes are musical... they are tuned to work
harmonically together... (usually)

Not the phone noise itself, the interference you get when
you put it too close to speakers or old electronic gadgets.
Mobile ringtones make me want to strangle things.

Oh, and:

- Far-away motorway noise
- Popcorn popping
- Near-subliminal squeak of cleaning your teeth with a
finger
- Hair snipping
- Lightbulbs popping as they go from usable to not

ah. ok.

I actually hate that sound... as its not good for your
speakers... I hate hearing it on my nice moniters :'(

tooth squeak and hair snipping are good though!

i love hissing of pipes... any mechanised function...
clicking and shifty sounds... doorbells and car
horns...creaking and shuddering sounds... things that sound
heavy... vocal sounds that sound like they couldn't possibly
be vocal...

Is it possible to actually tune "sounds" as opposed to
"notes" (although personally i think there's fuck all
difference between sound and music, to me personally at
least, i try to listen to both with equal intensity) to work
harmonically together? I'd assume so, but never got around
to trying it, and wouldn't really know where to begin.

Have you heard "nice dream" by radiohead? (not heard that in
years actually - *goes to play it now*) where the wordless
vocals seem to fade back in but it's done completely by
vocal chords alone? And for ages you're not sure whether
they're actually thom's vocals or some sort of synth?

Wow.

Glitchy noises like clicks, whirrs and blips.

The sound I heard when I open my bedroom window. Behind our
house there are lots of trees, I can usually hear them
waving too and fro from the wind. I just hear it and I think
"Earth".

My girlfriends voice.

I like the sound it makes when you hit the side of your head
when your ears are full of water - too bad it feels
terrible.
