what does this mean to the common man?

does it just give away their secrets? Or can I d/l the code
and make HL2 myself?

This is awful news, now they'll have to rewrite SO much of
the game to prevent people from exploiting the engine,
finding out how to crack it, know how to fuck with Steam,
etc. Fucking thing's going to be delayed even more. Hope the
prick(s) is proud of himself.

And it's no stunt, a 1.6gig file is set to be released next
week.

this is fucking horrible,

hope these people get what's coming to them and loose a
shitload of money, or possibly get jail because of it

The HL2 engine is the most advanced game engine there is.
Forget Doom3. Ok so maybe D3's graphics are better but HL2
has an interlocking AI/Physics/Materials system which is
quite simply mind-blowing.

What this means is that all competitors get their hands on
the underlying cogs. Don't get me wrong I'm totally pro open
source developments but this will totally cripple one of the
only companies producing stuff worth playing. 5 years of
development. Financially it'll probably kill them.

it's like stealing a car ... and the blueprints to every
moving part within. Imagine how bmw would take that... :(

that is what I thought.

that sux. I know they make most of their dough off of
selling the engine anyway, so they are fucked.

Do self respecting companies look at shit like this if it
corsses their desk? or do they look away?

i heard about that.

they mentioned at PHL that a similar thing happened with
Quake 2. i hope they can get around this problem somehow. at
least it had nothing to do with the delay.

This sounds pretty bad.
But, realistically, will it lead to anything? I think
Half-Life 2 will still sell a gillion copies. And Valve will
have plenty of ciash

i'll buy the game for sure. counterstrike is one of the
greatest things to happen to online gaming, and i'm more
than happy to support the people who gave that to me.

bet you they do. Hey I would purely on the basis of
acquisition of knowledge. Anyway I'm not so sure that
they're *that* fucked. No game company is going to use the
engine without paying for it because the Valve lawyers would
be down on them like a ton of bricks. It's the fact that
they worked for 5 years to push the boundaries and now the
techniques they came up with are up for grabs. That would
severely piss me off.

That's fucked :(

So much of Valve's money and time will just go down the
drain because of this. I wouldn't buy the game solely
because it's too heavy for my PC, but with a game like that
I'd seriously consider buying it though.

that really sucks.

how would this affect the game's release date .. if at all

wasn't it meant to be released, like, this week?

and something like this won't fuck over halflife 2 sales at
all; it just fucks over valve's entire business model.
there would have been a LARGER drive to build such a massive
engine for the resell value; not just because of halflife2.

they'd be crying.
