sound engineers are geniouses.. you just need to get a
proper one(in other words: NOT one that works at
"Billie-Jeans big shoppe of sound-thingamadongs")

Pay them upon delivery of the stuff or give them half
before, half after. You can usually agree to that sort of
arrangment if it's some smalltime engineer rather than
someone at a studio. I got a sound guy to travel about 200
miles and work for 9 hours before he saw any cash. Needless
to say he did a good job and was paid in full at the end of
the night. With something as subjective as sound quality,
it's entirely possible that they might give you an awful
service and yet you'd be hard pressed to prove that it was
their doing in court (if you're playing live). At least if
you haven't paid them yet, the ball is in your court.

As an aside, I've never had a bad experience with a sound
engineer in a club. One was a bit poor at his job (he was
also the manager and I think sound tech. was just a hobby of
his) and didn't seem to know how to use the compressor
properly. So we waited till he had gone to the other room of
the venue and then a friend and myself sound checked quickly
and adjusted the setting on the EQ and compressor and it
sounded fine. As if to demonstrate his ineptitude, he didn't
notice the change in sound quality when he came back :)

If his dad is a cop, tell him the situation, he probably has
a strong sense of right and wrong and as long as the son
didn't mention tax before hand he may even make him hand
over the mix...

If you want to fuck him up (if you think he is asking for
tax, but won't actually pay it to the govt.) ask him for a
VAT number, if he doesn't have one he's scuppered.

hahaha a cop with a strong sense of right and wrong...what
world do you live in? Cops are the most crooked people in
the world after politicians.

Yes, but if it's their son and it'll reflect badly on them
they will be keen to get it sorted- can you imagine the
headlines in the local rag, "Local Policeman's son fined for
tax evasion- father denies knowledge"?
