defrag

I really need to defragment both of my hard drives.. I
analyzed both drives and when I view the report of the
analysis, it mentions things like "238 fragments" attached
to certain mp3s and wavs of my music and a couple of
thousand fragments attached to various files created in my
chaotic dvd-authoring experiment sessions.. by defragmenting
am I risking losing data vital to the existence of these
files? or is what is to be defragmented a superfluous
something that needs to go away?

A defrag should just rearrange where the bits of each file
are stored physically on the drive, still keeping the file
intact.

From what I understand of drive storage, a file is written
in little blocks, which a pointer at the end of each block
to say where to go and look for the next block in the file.
That way a file can be spread out all over the drive and
there doesn't have to be any one single space big enough to
fit the file continuously. Defraging just collects all the
bits of all files together, freeing up more continuous empty
space and improving file access/read time.

it just organizes your harddrive so the files can be found
easier,.. something like that, its not harmful
