Dead Cities...

...the Limited Edition.

Actually FOUND IT, practically mint condition for $15.

It's a helluva of an item; so huge, I'm gonna review the
book AND the album.

The book:

Is 196 pages chock - a - block FULL of first - rate [mid
90's 3-D] distorto imagery, full of recurring cityscapes,
movie freezeframes, flash - negatived (and sometimes,
positived) photography, all tied tangentially together by a
stream - of - conciousness, ranting narrative against
privacy invasion & our society's assimilation of
technology.

I am sorry if I have spoiled the 'story', but you still have
some incredible artwork to enjoy. Besides, this doesn't even
account for...

Lucky Bastard. That things slipped outta my fingers. The
guy working at the shop decided to hide it after I took a
look at it.

...THE MUSIC.

Quite simply, it stands as their greatest single album.

NOTHING I have ever heard screams "unlicensed film score"
more loudly. However, what sets FSOL apart from the fields
of film music composers is their INCREDIBLE sense of
sampling juxtaposition, and spot - on pacing.

Beefs ?

WWWEEEELLLLLL, Her Face Forms In Summertime is a bit long,
the seguing (sp?) could have been a little bit more sorted
(and shorter), but this still stands as an exceptional
album.

Final Score: 8.8 / 10

[+1 for the amazing booklet]

9.8 / 10

OK, the price affects my judgement somewhat, but it's
incredible.

It's the Tardis of albums, bigger on the inside than on the
outside. Every time I listen to a track I hear something
new.

Holy shit, that book sounds amazing... ultra-drool. Is there
a picture of it somewhere, I've never saw it before.

And on topic, yeah, that's a fantastic album, really
engrossing. Gee-nee-yus.

I'd like to own this. Dead Cities is still one of my
favorites, right next to ISDN.

I've been after a copy of Dead Cities for years...

It's a hard CD to find here in Perth. But I finally got it
last week. Honestly, this album has a really hypnotic effect
on me....there's nothing really else like it...

Still have to find ISDN though *sigghh*
:)

I've also got that EARTHBEAT compilation on CD; all the
early FSOL stuff before they became FSOL (YAGE, SMART CUBE
etc..)...I heard that's pretty rare as well...

Anyone know if it is?...or how much it's worth....

No but what are the tracks like?

I have the humanoid thing for 84-88, are they anything like
that?

Not as Aciddy as the Humanoid stuff...difficult to describe
really, but imagine a simplified, dancified version of FSOL,
all aimed at the dancefloor rather than the sofa; I guess
kinda close to Papua New Genine (ouch, My spelling has gone
to HELLLLL :)))...

after the death of the stakker supremo humanoid period we
regrouped licked our wounds and took stock of our first
taste of the music industry - it had been exciting but
everyone had seemed so unreal like cartoon fictions playing
roles that were just so stereotypical as to be laughable -
it was amazing to see that there were people who actually
lived their lives in this fashion - at this point jumpin and
pumpin surfaced - and we spent a glorious period of about a
year re-inventing ourselves working under a whole batch of
new names - Smart Systems with their intense industrial rave
machine, Mental Cubes euro technoid, Intelligent
Communications, Indo Tribe, Yage-partly this was artistic
(we didn't know who we were anymore) and partly financial -
(we were paid about a grand each release) seeing as I had
lost my thursday and friday proof reading job at nine to
five magazine and Brian was strapped for cash trying to take
Streetsounds to court over the Humanoid fiasco - we had to
keep up a steady stream of releases to survive - ultimately
all we wanted was to be a lazy fat album concept band ( joke
) but at this time there was neither the market nor the
inclination to do so - so in the meantime we had to jostle
for position in a structure that wasn't exactly to our
liking - we had to try and write singles - gradually
realizing this wasn't easy enough and was also resulting in
a certain lack of depth in the music - we introduced the
notion of eps which had different band creations of ours on
them - the pulse eps immediately took off and was the first
home to fsol tracks - Pulse State and Stolen Documents On
Pulse 1 - thus the stage had now been set for fsol -
Earthbeat the album is a convenient synopsis of this
formative period before the fat lazy concept years took hold
...

More on the industrial techno side of things, but with epic,
swooshing ambient in between the harshness...

"Yage" is one of the best pieces of music I've ever heard.

hehe...
"Some weird greek instrument that no-one can remember the
name of except for the greeks in greece"

Factoid for ya: Yage is the name of a drug used by the
Shamans of South America & Africa...

I believe, but not 100% sure, it's also known as IBOGAINE -
a real wonder drug expect to hear more of...Not a fun drug
but I'm hearing many great stories from smackheads about it
being an INSTANT cure for opiate addiction...(something like
a 80% success rate..)...

The Dead Cities book is one of the most superb things ever
created. I got the normal edition album when I first got
into them, and always wanted a bigger booklet. My only
problem with it is it does re-use some artwork from past
releases that doesn't seem to fit in it.
Oh, and yeah, mine's falling apart too. I was lucky enough
to get one for about £20. They are quite expensive at
times, but they turn up on Ebay on a fairly regularish
basis.
As for the album... I have no words. Ambient IDM at its very
best. Even beats Amber in that area. Yes.
