having got into "idm" (still unsure about that term) only recently, i remember listening to confield for the first time, in the dark having smoked a bit of weed, and it was one of the best musical experiences i have ever had... it helped me realise that the music handed out to us on a plate by MTV, radio 1 and the media in general is only scratching the surface of the vast choice of music that is out there ready to be listened to.
i'm interested to know how people initially discover music that would not normally covered by the 'mainstream', and also how you listen to that music for the first time.
i mean, there is always an element of surprise and intrigue when listening to an album for the first time (especially in this genre, with sounds occuring that sound out of the ordinary to the untrained ear), so say you've just bought an album you've been meaning to buy for a while.. & you expect it to be good, but you want the *full* experience of the album the first time you listen to it, what kind of situation/conditions do you go for?
sorry if i've been a bit verbose, i don't usually post to many messageboards :-P

Hmmm that's interesting...
What i tend to do is make myself a cup of tea and ciggarette, sit somewhere comfortable where i won't be distracted then i listen very, very intently to the sounds and that's it.

i usually listen to an album the first time in my car. but then i realize that my moving car is kinda noisey so next i try listening to it on headphones at work.
i always give stuff that sounds pretty good to begin with the "weed test" which is pretty much getting smoked out and listening to it on headphones or in my parked car.

I was introduced to music not covered by the 'mainstream' when my friend recommended the pi soundtrack in '99.
When I listen to any "good" music i lay in bed with my discman and put on my bose headphones and concentrate on it.

I don't have any special ritual for listening to music. It's usually just wherever I am at the time. I don't have a big stereo so I listen in my car (which has a decent system) or at my computer (I got a good pair of headphones and a pair of roland speakers as well). I have to listen a few times to appreciate anything, really.

If i know i'm going to have to listen hard to get the most out of some music (autechre, phthalocyanine, jamie liddel, cage, stockhausen) then it's generally in total darkness on my bed with headphones on. Nothing else will do :-)

My favorite way to listen to music (new or well-worn) is when I've got the house to myself in the evening. Get some Shreddies and a magazine, but the music on the big stereo in the living room, put it on so loud that I'm surprised I've never gotten complaints from the neighbours, sit in the Laz-e-Boy and let the soundwaves wash over me and my Shreddies.
And I have to drive a lot, so I've got a ton of tapes specially made for that. I'll take the long way around town to get more time alone with the muzak.

I usually start out with listening to some tracks on the headphones without doing anything else, then play something loud to my family if i think its cool and theyd like it.
Then, when listening to the record entirely, i draw, because i know it will take me a lot of time, and when i begin i wont change the cd.
You can check out my drawings here by the way

music can do it for me anywhere almost, as long as i'm not distracted by outside sources.
i have my room where i am most of the time i'm home, so that's where i listen music.
usually it's dark, i only have one light on at the corner of the room, and my computer in front of me, sitting in a comfy leather chair.
when i put on something i really wanna enjoy i lay my head on the desk, and sleep almost, while listening.
as for your other question, i got into idm via orbital, i listened to 'middle of nowhere' for a year straight, every day with my discman when taking the subway to school.
then, i read about plaid, found out they were amazing, then autechre, and now i listen to almost anything.
and yeah i agree with you, mainstream music sucks. i have some friends who don't listen to anything but pop and rock/aka korn/deftones etc.
i think it's sad to see so many people who just disregard other types of music as "weird" "unlistenable", when in reality that exact music is the only music worth listening to sometimes.
sorry for the long post ;P

im a total muso when it comes to listening to music now. A musical snob if you will. If it doesnt have compound time signatures, or poly rhythms, or outstanding vocals, etc, then it generally sucks ass and falls into the 'everyone can do this, im writing by formula' category in my eyes. Sigh.

When "Things falling apart" came out I went to the librarybecause I wanted to listen to it in complete silence : )
Now with file stealing programs like soulsuck only the best albums survive. Makes music that much more disposable. I love it because it really raises the bar.

The label Constellation always has really nice album packaging, as does Alien8 it seems. Check out the new Silver Mt. Zion record, either of the Set Fire to Flames albums, they're beautiful. Also, the THICKEST and HEAVIEST record I have is the new Polmo Polpo - Like Hearts Swelling (Constellation). It must be like 300 grams! One of my favorite albums is Draft 7.30 which also has beautiful artwork and nice heavy wax (180grams).

Ive travelled alot around different beat patterns. first thing I was really into was queen. after that was this strange wu-tang 36 chambers and cypress hill tempels of boom era.
and then, on one shiney day, I got one hip-hop cassette from a friend who had recorded two unknown tracks to the end of the tape so there wouldnt be any empty space. these tracks were flim and come to daddy llf mix. the first and the last time it was to listen to the hip-hop part of that tape. ;)

if i'm reviewing something for MUISC.org then i sit down with WordPad open and basically listen in a very analytical sense.
However, in terms of everyday listening, i usually prefer to be moving (i.e. walking around or driving) to really listen to music. It's because i'm a kinetic thinker - my mind works best when i'm in motion.

I don't really believe in ever fully 'getting' an album on the first listen so I just put it on and listen at the next opportunity. It may be a while before I get to hear it all the way through in one go. Theres no point in sitting and paying close attention to it on the first listen... some albums just arent made for that.
