Aphex live

I will see Aphex Twin live!

he's playing at the Big Day Out which is a music festival
here in NZ...

What were his most recent sets like? does anyone know...

I downloaded an mp3 from an older Big Day Out (probablly an
Australian gig), it was only 29 mins long, I hope this set
will be longer than just half an hour...

Yeh, thats the gig from the Sydney BDO.

His recent gigs have been mp3s off a laptop with a
turntable. And there have been 1 or 2 actual tracks that RDJ
made in those sets.

what do you mean only one or 2 that he actually made? who
made the rest?

seperate gig before BDO or before heading off to Oz .. mmm..

Yeh, It will probably sound similar to that Pukklepop set he
did with Luke Vibrate.. sorry, Vibert ;) last year.

but usually plenty of fx and things to convince you he's not
checking his email ;)

i'll be comming up from Christchurch to see him and my bank

himself...

aye .. should be good. best make sure you got some credit
come jan tho! ...

oh why dj sets...he should play his own music(:

mmm

is there a recording of one of those dj sets floating around
soul seek?

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-09-28 04:45 [#00881313]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

no idea dude .. i spose so tho ?

why dj sets, i guess its easier (ie. can do more of them,
and not get bored of doing them). i'm sure he played some
unreleased stuff tho when i saw him in munich last year.

wonder who gets to go last, aphex or basement jaxx .. it'd
just be weird/wrong for bj to go after i'd think ?? mm..

offline Salma Hayek on 2003-09-28 04:48 [#00881315]

i hope he's not playing at the same time as The Strokes or
one of the other bands my mates plan to go see...

how are you sure it was his unreleased stuff/ was it good?

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-09-28 04:52 [#00881317]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

oh i'm not sure .. but as he was winding down, and cylob (i
think) was setting up), he played some mellow stuff ..
sounded quite "aphexy" .. sort of downbeat stuff, with
aphex-type soundscape things.

chances are the rock and dance thing is going to clash ..
quite a big rock line up for that sort of thing?! :S

offline Salma Hayek on 2003-09-28 04:57 [#00881321]
Points: 1056 Status: Regular

if they clash it would be quite bad as all my mates would
choose rock..(:

really the only reason i want to go is to see Aphex, so
that's why idealy i'd want him to not be playing a mere dj
set...

mr. vibert and jams are only reasons i'm really going ...
dunno ..

i'd say he'll play a bit of his stuff, seeing its his first
time in nz .. exposing himself or something, not just as a
dj - one would hope?

I really hope so...

and i hope it'll be longer than 30 minutes..

Vibert and jams... not music Salma is familiar with, any
reccomendations?

Luke Vibert aka Wagon Christ, Plug, Amen Andrews??? -> um ..
I haven't heard his new album Yoseph, or any of the Amen
Andrews stuff which is probably what he'll be playing most.
.. if u want i can send u a cdr(s) of some of his stuff down
to chechea ? mostly down tempo, tho amen andrews and plug
are more drum'n'bass/jungle/(disco?)

Mr. Jams (James) Ricki d Jams, Aphex etc. ;)

BDO slots are usually 1 hour aren't they .. Munich he played
for 1 1/2 hours (tho that was a Rephlex gig)

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-09-28 05:30 [#00881344]
Points: 4605 Status: Regular

recommended:
Plug - Ep's 1, 2, and 3 !! [proto drill n bass]
Luke Vibert - Big Soup [rather mellow hip hop]
Wagon Christ - um .. Tally Ho [ditto]

offline Salma Hayek on 2003-09-28 05:50 [#00881354]

sorry had to change computers...

i'll have to listen to some Vibert before i go ... and see
what I think...

the worst thing about this year's BDO is the headline act!
it almost makes me want to not go so that I won't be
contributing $$$ to their pockets...

offline korben dallas from nz on 2003-09-28 05:56 [#00881357]

true!

*shrugs* .. still 't be good to support some local acts etc.
.. should be some good stuff amongst it as well :)

btw: Yoseph is meant to be acid grooves with Vibert-esque
hip hop grooves ... Amen Andrews is mean to be jungle (Amen
breaks) with a hint of disco ?? mmm..

like it , may be enough to buy it ??//

mm

did you like the Aphex gig you saw last year?

i wonder if he gives autographs!

The gig was phenomenal!

Astrobotnia, Aphex, Cylob, Bogdan .. hope i'm not forgetting
anyone! all jammin away!!! madness .. i had a wee chat to
the man himself, tho i imagine it'd be a bit different in
the Boiler room ... there was no backstage in Munich!

ps: check my profile, I'm uploading a few tracks on my puny
ftp ;)

ah i know the feeling, i was getting well into that last
semester, only handed in one essay on time the entire first
half year ..

amazing what 5% off/week late does for your work ethic. good
luck with the essay (sociology right?)

no, it's political science this one..

actually this year i never once started an essay even the
day before it was due, all of them I started the day it IS
due, or even after..

what do you study? i'm doing a BA in pols and soci

i LOVE pols...i just really bad habits i can't get rid
of...

i might do some summer courses to speed up my degree as
well..
philiosophy is a subject that i'd love to do atleast 1 paper
in before the end of my degree

haha .. that sounds SO familiar .. i tell ya .. wasn't the
subject matter i wasn't into .. just perpetuating bad habits
(i was doing a conjoint, the psych is what bogged me down -
and probably was quite conducive to the bad habits).

anyway .. i'm going to hit the sack!

nb: most of the vibert tracks i got are rather
mellow/chilled hip hop, i don't think he plays quite that
mellow-a style live? but will see i spose
