roland tr 505 and other tr x0x drum machines

hevquip from a giraffes throat on 2001-11-13 21:31 [#00051627]

does anyone have experience with any of the roland tr x0x
series? i'd like to hear about the tr 505 mainly (they're
real cheap). also the tr 606, tr 626, tr 707. i'm planning
on getting a tr 727 sooner or later, so i'd like to hear
about it too.

go to machines.hyperreal.org to get samples of 505, 606,
626, 707, 727, 808, and 909.. hear for yourself because i
don't actually own any of these machines (although i have
played around with a 606, pretty limited unless you know how
to modify it)

Ehhr.. the 505 sounds crap!

I wish I had a 505, they had one in town that I was going to
get, but it turned out to be broken, sounds good, but
because its only stereo out theres not alot of room for
individual instrument manipulation, but its nice for some
jazzy type drums, I love the ride cymbal...

a program called 'rebirth' contains tr808 +tr909 and is fun
to mess with. its available on the net for free somewhere...

i hate software and the 808 and 909 get used way too much
and are costly. the 505 is cheap and has a good sequencer,
but it sounds like crap from what i hear. the 626 can
probably found for pretty cheap and it has tuneable sounds.
i'm not looking for something with too typical sounds. i
want something lame with really crappy electronic sounding
drums. i also want something that i can program beats real
close together, like my hr-16b which i can divide one beat
thingy into 16, which allows me to do drill and bass type
music.

i suspect that a good rule of thumb here would be, the
dijital roland x0x are very diferent from the analogue x0x.

i think the only thing that makes the x0x drums so cool is
the 808/909 style step sequencer, and i dont beleive they
all have this.

theres loads of hardware mods to be found for many of the
roland boxes on the net. like extra outs, added tweakability
etc.

the digital ones have prety good midi implementations.

and the analogue ones have good tweakability.

909 is probably the nicest because it combines dijital (hi
hats, cymbal,) with analogue bass drum. and has good
tweekability and midi.
thats why they cost an arm and a leg.

i don't have any of them though and having played with an
909 i'd snap up any of them that came allong cheep.

I'm currently saving up for some equipment... I plan to buy
a TR909 and some other stuff. It's, what, a grand?
