Aphex Twin coming to Australia finally!!!

Wooo this is the best news i've heard in a while! Coming to
the Big Day Out. I know there's alot of Perthlings here,
let's just hope he doesn't drop off after Melbourne like
alot of big acts do. I'll be going to the Melb one anyway
and if he continues onto Adelaide and Perth then i'll go to
Adelaide one too when i come back.

"BDO 2004 sees the long awaited return of electro-deity
APHEX TWIN, aka Richard D James, aka AFX, Polygon Window and
Caustic Window. APHEX TWIN caught the ears and eyes of both
electronic and rock fans and has received wide acclaim for
expanding the possibilities for esoteric electronic music as
well as his unforgettable videos made by Chris Cunningham.
He'll be joined by long time collaborator LUKE VIBERT. Seen
most recently at Reading 2002, APHEX TWIN's set was voted
'most intense performance' over and above Slipknot! He's
back to fill and thrill the Boiler Room with his
unclassifiable, genre busting live performance."

Just read "Unless otherwise stated, all acts listed below
are appearing at all venues from Auckland through to
Perth..." so looks like he's doing all cities!

Errr. yeah.

Cheers for that news bjg, I really don't like the Big Day
Out gigs, so I'm hoping he does a side gig or something.
But if not looks like I'll have to buy a BDO ticket to see 1
performance (again).
$98 tickets! argh

The Melbourne show is on 26-01-04, which is my 20th
birthday! :D
So that'd be lovely.

Yeah, JJJ will probably do the same thing they did with the
last BDO aphex gig.
I'll keep the ears open.

I'm in Athelstone, but work in the city on Gouger St... heh,
where you'd move from?

And why the fuck did you move here, anyway? It's a goddamn
hole!

Hehe, i moved from Tassie. I like Adelaide :) My mum had to
go for work or something so i just came with her. Just
working now until uni next year.

Where's Athelstone? I only know western suburbs and north
east.

offline xf from Australia on 2003-09-26 01:22 [#00878901]
Points: 2952 Status: Lurker

yeah, it is north east, near holden hill and crap - heh,
adelaide's quiet and slow, which is a good thing; but if
you're looking for a decent scene here in the way of
music/pubs/stuff to do, forget it. i don't even bother
going out lately - i don't drink much (in fact, haven't for
months), don't do drugs, so if the music sucks, the night
generally does too.

always plenty of stuff to do in melb/syd though, every time
i go over there on contract development work.

you want idm/braindance in adelaide? heh, forget it :(
unless you can surprise me by discovering something...

Ah ok, like over near Modbury and Golden Grove etc?

Yeah i wasn't expecting much in the way of night life etc.
Well it's better than Tassie of course, but i don't drink
much either or do drugs. I only been out a few times in the
city and North Adelaide and it was alright.

Good thing about here is it's sorta close to everything.
Like only a day's drive to Melb or a single flight to
anywhere else. All my family live in Melb so i go down there
a bit.

offline xf from Australia on 2003-09-26 01:33 [#00878906]
Points: 2952 Status: Lurker

nah, closer to the city then golden grove.

heh, where you been/what have you done?

and yeah, i've got a few friends from tassie who came over
here for a holiday... they loved it here, so go figure, i
guess.

Just been working really. Just as much as i can until uni
next year. I tried to get in midyear here cause i was at uni
in Tassie but they wouldn't accept midyear enrolments so
have to wait now.

What's there to do that i probably haven't done? Only been
here about 4 weeks and started a fulltime job like a day
after i got here - well have a couple of weeks off now.
Sorta work like a month or so, then get a couple weeks off,
the back to it as it's shiftwork.

ah, you in year 12, or left school?

haha, what's there to do? you've probably already done it
all - go to one or two nightclubs in adelaide and you've
been to them all. you've got two types of clubs in adelaide
- the typical type where you get guys who only go to 'pick
up', and females who are thick as bricks, and the only thing
played is r&b and cheesy trance/techno, then you've got the
'alternative' clubs filled with emo/goth types who think
they're so much better then everybody else, and oh god how
they're so different, even though they're
saying/thinking/doing/wearing what everybody else is.

both types make me want to stick a fork in my eye and gauge
it out.

it's fun. (recommend it!)

actually, if you're into mike patton (tomahawk, fantomas, mr
bungle, faith no more) he's doing a show here in two months
or something, that /should/ go off, although it's at heaven
(one of the cheesiest, crappiest r&b nightclubs around;
although my mate reckons they have good soundgear, which is
a plus).

what a stupid question, you just said you worked full time
:p

what do you do? finding a job within a day is pretty
good...

offline bjg from Adelaide (Australia) on 2003-09-26 02:08 [#00878918]

Cheers, i didn't mind Mr Bungle. I never really got into
them more than a few songs though. Yeah sounds like Tassie's
clubs, except no goth/emo ones. Just the lame pick up joints
like jimmy rowes etc.

I just got a transfer with Coles. Used to just work after
school and uni etc in Tassie, so put in for a transfer. Not
doing normal Coles work though, but just working on the
remodels around Adelaide, and been working in the state
office. Just finished off West Lakes and now have a 2 or so
week break until i think Glenelg or Wellan. Not sure which
one i go to. It's just shitty work but awesome pay since the
hours are from like 8pm - 6am or so. And yeah, finished year
12 the year before last. Just went to uni after that doing a
degree in business info systems.

offline xf from Australia on 2003-09-26 02:17 [#00878921]
Points: 2952 Status: Lurker

ah, okay, sounds cool - heh, fair enough, took me a while to
get into patton's stuff but i love it.

yeah, there's not many of those types of clubs here; there
are a few, which at first you'd think would be interesting
because they're different, but then you're faced with people
that have bigger ego's then ronald macdonald, coupled with
the fact their 'unique' music tastes are almost always just
the same as everybody else.

(omg new manson totally rulez!11111)

i know a bunch of guys here that used to be into idm, but
they've moved (surprise surprise), and a bunch of guys in
melb/syd (i.e. refund, you rulz), but adelaide doesn't seem
to have many people even interested in it. there's not
even an industrial scene here; just a very, very small
goatrance scene.

mum toured here about two weeks ago; i missed it, i was
fucking spewing, too. the night before a friend told me
that there was this experimental band playing that were like
bjork - was going to go, but ended up working late on crap,
and tickets were $40, and i didn't know they were mum, but
wish i went now.

bet the turnout was incredibly small, too :(

i'm 20, i do a few things; daytime job is application
development for an it company (web based crap, mostly), out
of hours i work on contract, anywhere from internet cafe
software to wireless deployments for isp's. yes, i'm a geek
:)

Yeah i had a heap of mates in Tassie that were into IDM etc.
There was no real scene or anything though, we just used to
listen to RDJ and BoC etc. One of my mate's bros works for
channel 9 in Melb and does all sound effects and shit and he
got me into it pretty much.

Yeah you could call me a geek too. I've done some IT work
for Coles, no official position though. That's what i've
been doing in the state office though, just web app
development etc. Got a few certs in IT, but can't find a job
here yet in IT. It's always a case of "you need a job to get
experience to get a job".

It was just some employee's association webbased thing. Done
in ASP and SQL, but i'm probably better with PHP. What's
your company's name? Are they listing it on seek.com.au?
