well the xltronic discog is quite comprehensive for the IDM
related artists... discogs is mainly contributed by users
(some obscure music trolls mainly). Allmusic has more
coverage and good reviews by I guess semi-pro music
journalists.
I like to go to metacritics.com ; It's like a digest of
different e-zines and magazines articles. They give you a
'normalized' score on a 1 to 100 scale so you can have a
89.5% grade for an indy punk-rock band and a 64.2% for an
aphex release because they don't fucking understand the
'deep' meaning of kpta1 and kpta2 and WHY ON HEARTH THIS IS
THE BRILLANT MUSIC OF A GENIUS ... MYSELF (mogwai -
punkrock) !

it now).

All Music for reviews and bio's, cover art, and an extensive
non-electronic discography

discogs.com for extensive electronic discography

Allmusic Rules. Great reviews, excellent deep linking for
everything and anything even remotely related to an artist.
To top it all most of the releases can be heard on Barnes
and Nobles site in the form of 30 second clips. Check it.

discogs wouldn't let me comment on my artist page (i got no
voted) i was only pointing out some mistakes that app can't
be rectified but it's a good resource ...

i prefer:
allmusic over discogs
fakejazz over pitchfork

AMG gave the new outkast a non-bullshit review. i doubled
over with laughter reading pitchfork's review, as i so often
do on that awful site. good thing they have a news section
or i'd never visit except for the occasional comedy value of
their meaningless reviews.

Allmusic... I go to that and IMDB about 50 times a day each.
Discogs, only when I want to go REALLY in depth and learn
about rare/alternate releases, singles, whatever.

offline DeadEight from vancouver (Canada) on 2003-09-25 11:21 [#00878063]

i wouldn't choose... because neither is complete... or even
remotely close to it... you have to use both, and sometimes
more.... but amg is much better for finding new music...

and how can someone prefer fakejazz over pitchfork, when
pretty much all fakejazz reviews is obscure rock? when was
the last time anyone could talk about a fakejazz review on
xltronic?

I like both of them for different reasons, but I tend to use
allmusic.com more, since I'm not looking for super-rare
releases.

me too... and when i want to hear more obscure rock... i go
there... but they have the same inferiority complex as
pitchfork (they're just smaller)... and all they review is
rock... which is ridiculous

discogs for electronic music, allmusic for non-electronic
music. On Allmusic the discography of most of the electronic
artists is incomplete.

yeah, neither is perfect....but if the same album is
reviewed on both sites i tend to favor the opinions on
fakejazz over those on pitchfork.

fakejazz would definitely benefit from including other
genres in their reviews as well.

Ditto. The last shit one I read was Brian Eno's last
release... they spent 9 paragraphs about his fucking career
(even though they did that a while ago with a W.A.T.W. on
him), a quick paragraph on the album, then one more about
how the making of the album and that's supposed to be a
review.

5.2, apparently.

discogs is reasonably complete for release information and
an excellent reference, but most reviews are the biased
gushing of fans. also, anecdotally, there is a lot of
redundancy, and contributions are controlled by a group of
uninformed people who try to edit info they are unfamiliar
with, apply rules inconsistently, and rely more on dubious
web references than on the word of individuals who actually
own the release they are listing.

allmusic has interesting reviews, as with most resources
you'll agree with some and disagree with others. somtimes
the rating and the review don't seem to match, eg the rating
is two stars, but the review seems quite favorable. when it
comes to more obscure music (like much electronic music),
the coverage is spotty and the reviews usually nonexistent
or not very useful. the reviews are generally
straightforward, as opposed to say pitchfork, where a review
may be an exercise in how clever the reviewer thinks he/she
is.
