Her stuff I guess is okay. I think you have to be in the mood to appreciate it. I suppose its good that an actual women is doing electronic music and its fairly interesting.

roygbivcore,
Probably. But there are so few women doing electronic music that those who do always get interest. Its just one of those things when something has that novelty aspect to it makes it more interesting. I guess you right its not really the way to judge things though but perhaps I'm just being honest.

tired subject. the short of it is that there are plenty of female electronic musicians, they just don't receive the press that males do and often don't get signed because people can't take them seriously.

I don't know, Andrea Parker is consistantly taken seriously and is very, very good... I don't think I've ever heard/read a comment along the lines of, "If a man was making her music they'd not be signed." with regard to her.
Good thing too, she's very good looking and it'd be easy for people to say her looks might be the reason for her success.
That said, I agree that a lot of female electronic musicians get stick over their gender.

It seems odd that this is mainly a problem relating to electronica- even in mainstream dance females are fairly well represented. In classical orchestras, gender is hardly an issue at all.
Do you reckon it's to do with the techy aspect of it (like we were talking about yesterday- "IDM" is v. nerdy to make) putting women off whereas they're just as keen to play an instrument?

i think any female trying to make music without a mic is going to be ignored. instrumental music is ignored enough as it is, but the listener is less compelled to buy a non-singing female electronic artist's cd because there's this sexist notion that it can't live up to males, who are of course techier generally speaking. since most electronica fans are nerds whose experience with women is limited to say the least, giving praise to a female electronica artist is the last thing they want to do. so they don't check it out. labels know this, so they don't sign female electronic artists except as a joke (see quantazelle and her gimmicky blue hair and silver dresses).
btw i think if mum were all female and didn't sing no one would have heard of them outside of their hometown. and i think if andrea parker didn't pick up the mic and wasn't so easy on the eyes when you see her dj or in magazines--say she was a humongous and hairy butch lesbian--she'd be a nobody too.

In the orchestra, true - but women are severely underrepresented as classical composers and conductors.

I just don't know where these unsigned women electronic musicians are. I just never ever come accross women doing electronic music on the internet or anywhere? Seriously there aren't any.
