Autechre

Ceri JC from University of Glamorgan, Wales. on 2001-11-13 13:46 [#00051491]

I like Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Luke Vibert, Leila and
Kosmik Kommando. Which Autechre album/release do you reckon
I should get first, bearing in mind I've never heard
anything by them and want something that is typical of their
work.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

vi scose poise on 2001-11-13 14:07 [#00051501]

LP5 i reckon.... maybe Tri Repetae..... hmmmm get Confield
last (even tho its the best)

borix on 2001-11-13 14:13 [#00051502]

Ghe, ghe. I just started with Confield. Listening to it
right now btw for the 4th time I think.

Phobiazero from Sweden on 2001-11-13 14:15 [#00051503]

Get Amber, Anvil Vapre and LP5!

oki from grmny on 2001-11-13 14:24 [#00051509]

yep, amber
and tri repetae i´d say

borix on 2001-11-13 14:25 [#00051510]

Pffff.... maybe better skip the 3th song the first time. Too
wierd. :p

revpersona on 2001-11-13 15:18 [#00051518]

Start with Inacubla or tri-repitate.

revpersona on 2001-11-13 15:19 [#00051519]

I love typos! *tri-repetae

Ophecks from Nova Scotia on 2001-11-13 15:51 [#00051533]

Tri-repitate, hehe. That made me smile.

pyroglif from uK on 2001-11-13 16:00 [#00051539]

i never liked autechre much but someone else sugested
getting tri ripetae (e@syjesus i fink) which i recieved
yesterday and i love it. Maybe this will help me start
liking there other cds.

2-Me0-PhNMePr2N on 2001-11-13 16:28 [#00051555]

Get confield FIRST. Once you understand Confield, you will
understand it all.

borix on 2001-11-13 16:34 [#00051558]

Then I think I'm ready for the rest. But I'll spread it
around a little. Not too much the same time or else my brain
will overload. :D

hevquip from a giraffes throat on 2001-11-13 16:37 [#00051559]

i think you should get ep7 first. if you get tri repetae,
try to get tri repetae ++. it has the tri repetae album and
the second disk is two other albums of theirs. anvil vapre
is one of them.

The_Funkmaster from Newfoundland, Canada on 2001-11-13 20:16 [#00051597]

Get Incunabula... it's beautiful stuff, if a bit dated in
some places... Bike, Eggshell, and 444 are amazing!!!

I think you should check out Quaristice.

Yeah, pick up Tri Repetae ++. No doubt at all. If you don't
like that one (I didn't that much at first), try out LP5.
It's better, crazier, and more beautifuller.

Eventually you'll find out about something called Confield
and you'll probably shit yourself and have a revelation
about music as a whole and you'll desperately want to find
other people you can talk to about it, but it won't be easy.
Then you'll listen to Draft and be like "walla walla walla
walla walla walla"

Do not get Amber

I would pick up Amber, Tri Repetae and LP5 right away. If
you have those, you could probably get away without having
any of the rest of them.

Nah man, Chiastic Slide is where it's at!

You reckon? I'm not sure. I like a couple of the tracks on
there - the last one, whatever it's called - but I always
thought it was a bit of a step backwards from Tri Repetae.

Nuane (on chiastic slide) > entire tri repeate album

Tri repeate album = Chiastic Slide album

I think the first four tracks on Chiastic Slide and the last
track are better than anything on Tri Repetae. Especially
Cipater.

Tri Repeatae is pretty great, but the second half (apart
from the amazing second last track) leaves me a bit cold and
there's a few "meh" moments. I don't get why Chiastic Slide
is so unpopular (in comparison with the rest of their
outpt.)

offline jackeroffer from Aruba on 2008-02-05 13:22 [#02172110]
Points: 1038 Status: Lurker

i dont understand why either, i see it as their first real
foray into experimental territory. i think most people
honestly weren't ready for its genius, but EP7 and LP5
helped prime them for the insane-ness that is Confield. Tri
repeate is a lot more calm and toned down and less abrasive
than Chiastic slide.

offline Krendo from Leicester (United Kingdom) on 2008-02-05 13:39 [#02172126]

Well, I don't have the record to hand, but as far as I see
it there aren't very many stand-out tracks on it, and there
are too many duds. If I'm remembering correctly, Tewe,
Calbruc and Recury are all pretty weak. And Cichli, which is
a decent track, only really gets going after about five
minutes. It's nothing to do with me not being ready for it -
Autechre is hardly rocket science compared a Ligeti sonata.
I think some Ae fans get too caught up in this idea that you
have to be clever to "get" their later records. I think the
idea some of them need to face up to is that quite a few of
them - and I would definitely include EP7 in that - are not
very good.
Having said that, they're still one of my favourite bands...

i started with confield/draft and was never really able to
go backwards with the older material. it was pretty-much
forward-on from that point. lots of tunes i really like,
but by starting at confield it certainly had an affect.

???

EP7 is great imo.
Especially Dropp and Pir.
Tri Rep's second disc is great, that alone beats boring
chiastic.
Chiastic isn't too difficult or whatever, just boring apart
from cichli and nuane.

Well, if you mean that Kind of Blue is a better record than
A Love Supreme, I'd say you're right.

The other tracks of Confield = not so good.

Pen Expers is a big favourite on this website. Any Ae fans
from here responsible for this mad homage?!

Wow, Pen Expers is the centerpiece and everything around it
is the explanation. Sim Gishel? No love? When the bass drops
in on that shit I wet myself. No love for Bine? For Eidactic
or whatever? For Cfern?

Come on. You have to love Perhelic Triangle. Uviol? This
stuff is beautiful. Their most perfectly produced, endlessly
intricate, godsend of a recording.

Tri Repetae is amazing in its own way, but it isn't the same
thing. Confield is a long way ahead of its time.

I find Confield a little dull, but Pen Expers is 10/10, an
amazing track.
I much prefer the Gantz Graf EP to Confield.

Krendo, i think generally chiastic slide is one of their
most intensive sound design efforts. And the only reason i
said it might have been too ahead of its time to keep a lot
of the fans interested is because that was my initial
impression of listening to it, that it was too abrasive too
experimental and not the calm ambient Autechre that i had
grown to love.

meaning about a year after initially hearing it i finally
found chiastic slide appealing

Yeah, I was just listening to Chiastic Slide in the car. It
has some of my favorite Ae sounds, and such a strong
emotional atmosphere. I don't think tewe is a boring track
at all - it's very intricate and it has a lot of depth. A
very enjoyable listen overall, apart from one or two overly
repetitive tracks.

A nice fossil from the past depicting how 'music' for humans
used to spread via viral mouth to mouth advertising. It has
been preserved very well. Thanks to carbon dating we can
even figure out that 'University of Glamorgan, Wales. on
2001-11-13 23:46' means that this post is about 6 years old.
Simply amazing.

Oh my god, krendo's avatar gave me an idea: a superhero
named Plaidman and he shoots awesome plaid patterns from his
hand as weapons and wears plaid clothes of the finest plaid
quality. Often times he doesn't even have to attack because
the enemy gets stunned from his fantastic outfits.

Having now heard a fair bit of Autechre, I have decided that
whilst I respect what they do, the Garbage EP is the only
thing they've done that I really couldn't live without, the
way I couldn't live without, say, SAW 2. I must confess, I
haven't heard Quaristice yet.
