One thing I've noticed, compared to ther musical genres, is
how many IDM phans make their own music...

(and some of it is top notch stuff stuff ; you know who you
are...)...

Just outta personal interest, any theories why this should
be?....

because its hard to come by... so people feel compelled to
make their own?

*shrug*

i guess IDM is more challenging than most genres, perhaps?

i've even been making music recently, but i've nowhere to
post it yet.

The technology is within reach of the average person more
these days than ever before.

"Ultimately what is so great about electronic music is that
you can do things that are beyond a pair of hands." -Tom

other genres you need more than a computer program: guitar,
drums, vocal ability, etc.

pachi...if plans go ok, then I believe Phob is going to
offer web space for budding IDM'ers....

It's a lot easier to "afford" (read: steal) software than it
is more conventional music instruments.

That may be one reason anyway. Just the idea that it's
easily accessible.

WOW, I'm so inspired by these words of wisdom, how does he
do it?

Yeah it's all because it's so easy to get into - If you can
download an mp3, you can download Logic/Waves stuff/Sound
trackers, etc... no problem...
A lot of kids into punk music play guitar/drums - It's a
little harder 'cos it actually takes at least a year to get
good enough with any of those instruments to be of any use -
And it ends up costing quite a bit I guess... But with
Reason or something you can effectively make your own
passable electronic music with absolutely no
ability/ideas/skill/talent atall... You can - Not saying
that's the case though! It's just MUCH cheaper and easier to
get into these days... And IDM is so abstract you can make
passable music be doing little more than cutting up Amen
breaks and adding sound effects...
It's still the hardest music in the world to do well though.

Even the most unpopular weirdo can make some electronic
music, whereas to form an actual BAND, you need... people.

well, I also personally think that the technology is within
the reach of the average person more these days then ever
before

I cant beleive no one pointed that out yet!

i didn't quite finish my thought:

plus most people have computers now anyways, no one keeps a
guitar around to look at dirty pictures or type up school
papers

All this pointing stuff out is becoming rather pointless &
frankly it's downright rude

Yeah, then we could all comunicate through it, & people
would evolve & become whales

because generally idm is sort of smartish nerdish music.
people make idm on computers, people who listen to idm
generally know how to use computers. Therefore it's a simple
transition between listening to idm and knowing how to use
computers to listening to idm and knowing how to use
computers and actually making idm on computers.

well, i know i wouldn't be making "music" if it weren't
stuff like this. i'm really not all that "musical" (some of
you might agree with me after hearing some of my tracks.
hehehe), so this makes things a lot easier for me. *shrugs*

My usual response is to this is that IDM is nearest to
(computer) programming in the way it is written- tracksers
are in hex, supercollider is a procedural language, you can
actually write csound bits in LISP, things like
buzz/audiomulch are not entirely different to graphical
object oriented programming etc.

As Od pointed out, a lot of us who listen to idm tend to
work with, or at least are able to use, a computer and are
generally quite technically proficient. As a result when it
comes to making music, we are able to learn even the more
complex programs very quickly and hence generate "passable"
music even if we have little musical talent. In much the
same way as almost anyone could use "ejay X" to make any
other genre of music.

- JAZZ -
No rock, no electronica, no hip hop, no reggae, no f**kin`
pop..
But I love dat shit!
