ok... so I want to get a portable recorder of some sort...
and Im basically down to 2 things...

either a Minidisc, or a PMD670

now. The PMD670 is 700 bucks.

Minidisc players go from 150-400 or so. Id assume Id want a
good minidisc, and so obviously the upper end models
probably will be better...

so... do I spend 400 on a minidisc, which is cheaper... and
also cheaper memory (blank minidiscs are cheeeap), or do I
splurge and spend 700 on this other thing, which has uses
flash cards, and doesnt have the minidisc compression. This
is pure signal. And holds alot more.

Thoughts?

well...I don't know jack about stuff like this, but i'd say
go with the MD untill you REALLY feel the need for the other
one.
You'll then have time (and money) to experiment, instead of
sitting with shitload of hightech equipment that you probly
don't need.

Well, I would do that anyway..

Make up your mind and make some good music

I do like Marantz equipment... but then $700 is a lot for a
portable recording device.

Have you considered a second hand portable DAT recorder from
ebay?

I wouldn't worry about media costs if you go for the marantz
thing- you can always save recordings off to PC/mac then
burn them to CD. Just fork out for a large memory card
(maybe 512mb) and you'll be laughing.

Personally I'd avoid minidisc- sound quality is not much
better than mp3 (sounds a lot worse than mp3 in some cases
on the cheaper models!) also, they seem incredibly
unreliable- about 4 people I know have had problems with
theirs.

I guess I'm biased as I missed a first by two marks in a
multimedia module due to an unreliable minidisc player
cocking up my field recordings, but I am waiting till I can
afford a DAT or a thing like the Marantz recorder...

The second hand DAT is a good idea, they must be pretty
cheap now.

Well, if you think that you personally will notice the
difference in sound quality, you should splurge..but i
would've thought that a minidisc would have sufficed.

Go for a second hand Minidisc off ebay, you wont need a top
of the range job as you pay extra for features like x4
recording time which gives you more recording time
(obviously) but halves the audio quality. My old MD used to
sound great, erm...it was a few years ago & I cant remember
the make of it.

Remember, If you buy second hand you can always get back
what you paid as long as you didn't pay over the odds, who
knows you might even make some money on it 8D

Note: I am not a lightly fried pickle & cannot be held
responsible for my actions.
