Yes no kiddin', there is not one note, rest or whatsoever
in this 2 page book, only a written part by Cage which
sais:

"The title of this work is the total length in minutes
and seconds of its performance. At Woodstock, N.Y., August
29, 1952, the title was 4'33" and the three parts were 33",
2'40", and 1'20". It was performed by David Tudor, pianist,
who indicated the beginnings of parts by closing, the
endings by opening, the keyboard lid. After the Woodstock
performance a copy in proportional notion was made for Irwin
Kremen. In it the timelengths of the movement were 30" 2'23"
and 1'40". However, the work may be performed by any
instrumentalist or combination of instrumentalists and last
any lengths of time.

For Irwin Kremen"

Then the page that contains the 'music' only sais:

I Tacet
II Tacet
III Tacet

The reason why i bought it is actually that i was amazed by
the fact that "Edition Peters", from which i had Czerny and
Satie stuff already and which in my eyes is a renowned
company for sheet music, actually published this piece of
'nothing' as being sheet music. I found this quite bizarre
and funny at the same time.

I'm thinking of hanging the pages on the wall behind glass.

(oh and the guy at the shop where i ordered it was all "uh..
we weren't quite sure if this was what you wanted us to
order.. are you gonna 'play' this or what? ..you really
gonna buy this?)

:)

course!

for 8 bucks, i think i might be able to write my own sheet
music for this performance. and still have enough money left
over to buy.. hmm.. at least 5 dollars worth.. hmm.. of
anything.

i bet it was almost worth buying it so that the
people at the store would think you were some kind of creepy
fetishist.

indeed.

ALL THIS TIME we thought it was Thad who had said "NO !"
that specific time.

but that is cleared up NOW !

A professor I once had for a music class, along with several
of his friends, actually lured John Cage back to their
apartment with some red wine, and ended up talking most of
the night - strange, but true...

oh yeah baby.
but as i said twice; to hang on the wall,
just like you would hang a drawing or painting on there,
this is probably even cheaper

i dont get why it's 4'33": normal pieces of music dont last
an exact amount of time, and he composed it like a normal
piece: thinking about this part should be like this, then
this like that etc. guess it should have been so much bars.
also it makes it so mathematical, which cage didnt want to
be, he could have called it budhistically (geegh) "nothing",
or something

john cage is a bit over-rated in my opinion. he's not that
great, only well-known.

I don't think the pieces for modified piano are particularly
astounding.

you would even buy it on cd if it was available, right
morton

John Cage "The Sound of Silence"

you think anyone ever did that? Just a clear silent cd, as
an album? I would buy it.

arg! i fucking hate this piece now...i had a performance at
school. this was deadset the worst concert i have ever
played in, and couldnt wait until i could get out of
there...but nooooo two people found it necessary to perform
it. what topped it all off was that afterwards one of the
performers went on about it and explained its meaning and
signifficance blah blah, but thought it was by philip
glass....i laughed at her a lot before someone corrected
her...
