that's a crazy question.
It totally depends on the situation.

Oh and while we're at it ~

It does depend. However I'll say percussion. Takes more
creativity and with melody you can get lucky.

beats are certainly the most tedious to make.

is it really ?

i mean i'm now in the moment that i can say that i can make
really good drums, but my melodies are pityful...

xammax: i'll think about that. i have the coolest one on the
board

Percussion would maybe take longer, more intricate, etc...
but you could get better at it, work at it, perfect it.

But I think melodic talent is something you're born with.
You've either got the gift, or you don't, and if you're not
melodically inclined, you'll never ''learn'' to be anything
more than average. Paul McKawtney can't read or write music,
while Yngwie Malmsteen can stick a thousand notes on top of
each other, and somehow still suck. Richie has the gift, so
it's all gravy.

I say drums in anything. You can have a great melody, but
less-than-creative beats can render it ho-hum at best.

That being said, I do not have any full songs together yet,
so I shouldn't even talk.

don't agree with that. even the most wicked drums get boring
after a while when there's nowthing playing in the deep...

it depends on how you emphasize them.

what i do is try and achieve balance. for example, when i
have a melody goin, i try not to saturate the drums, but
when the melody steps out i eccentuate the drums like mad
and have a drum solo.

this may sound kinda weird, but it's comparable to two
different groups having a discussion. if you try and max out
both the melody and drums, it's like both groups shouting
out a bunch of words that no one can comprehend.

it's all about balance and harmony really.

For IDM, track titles are an underrated aspect of the
creative process... you GOTTA make them hip enough, cutting
edge!

It all depends. Drums should sound organic most of the time,
but if you use drill 'n' bass or afx-ish drums, you should
make it sound organic AND syntethic. There should always be
organic "matter" present. (hint: shuffle quantizing).

Well... I became very interested in super intricate
percussiony type sounds especially after being inspired by
the rdj album, come 2 daddy, and feed me weird things... and
then later even crazier more organic and twisted stuff like
8000 bc, and lp5. I finally found a great way to mass
produce highly intricate percussion myself using my patented
triple octave snarkle technique. So this type of percussion
is fairly easy for me now. And I've always loved melody but
usually sucked at it. Now I'm improving (I wish I could make
something now but my computer has no sound) because I
realized how I was doing it pretty much wrong. You just
can't treat melody like percussion if you want it to sound
good. THe new rules in their construction don't involve lots
of copy/paste editing/mixing.. instead you basically make
anything using white keys only but never play simultaneous
adjacent keys, at least that's what I'm finding out. It's
also best to make the sounds used in melody have some sort
of interesting structural quality like crunch and autechre
always do.. ex. tilapia.
