no, it's not dumb, it's just the choice of some people not to use any drugs, and as long as they don't have an attitude about it, it's totally okay.

What is ridculous about it? Do you not like the music or the movement? Things can seem stupid a decade later, its like Farrah Fawcet Hairdos straight edge is product of the late 80's early nineties and it was a reaction/backlash against the Nazi skinheads who are ridculous...

I don't think it's stupid. It's a lifestyle choice. I don't personally practice it, and I really can't stand the music that's associated with sXe, but hey, you're not hurting anyone (and it's a healthier way to live, too).

A lot of Straight Edge people are vegetarian, but in the 'origingal definition' (as far as there is an original definition) it was most definately not included, although Ian McKaye, from minor threat who wrote the song "the straight edge", is a vegetarian.

but understand their reaction to an entire culture that completely accepts drugs/alcohol/sex
it's all lame. living to be part of ANY scene is lame, that is why it's so hard to like rock music now.

Yeah, I choose to not drink or do drugs, but I'm not part of any "scene". It's just a lifestyle choice. I don't identify with a particular subculture like the sXe's do.
It's like any social group. People want to be accepted by other people who have the same interests and opinions. That's why we are members of this messageboard. A lot of people don't listen to the music we love and its nice to have a place to come to to talk about it.
Same with sXe; it's an incredible minority in this world, and you always get shit for not choosing to take part in stuff, so thats why they have formed their little clique.

It's not stupid, it's a good thing that more and more kids are feeling a sense of unity with others that feel the same way they do about drugs/promiscuity/whatever...It's used as a label not to be a fad (although some treat it that way, but fuck them), but rather for convenience and as i said, a sense of unity.
I don't really call myself that, but I'm basically straightedge i just don't go to hard/metal/grindcore shows.........yet.

Drugs I've done = alcohol, a valium prescribed to my cat. That's it.
I have no problems whatsoever with drugs, except when they are abused. Why don't I smoke pot? Because it is something that although there have been plenty of opportunities for me to try it, I just have not wanted to take on another vice. At this point, at 29 years old, I just don't think I need it. Just a personal choice.
However, I sorta wish alcohol and marijuana were reversed in today's society. There are a number of reasons:
> People high on grass are by and large much more chill and harmless than people high on booze.
> Drunks are much more dangerous and practice much worse judgement than people on pot.
> Pot seems like a better drug to be on than booze for the sake of creativity.
> Booze makes you gain weight. > I'm sick and tired of seeing TV commercials showing the evils of pot back to back with beer commercials, when the number of alcohol-related deaths must easily quadruple the number of drug related deaths.
> etc.
I'd trade if it didn't stand a chance of losing me my job.

I wish people would stop trying to label and pigeonhole everything and everybody. It's just marginalization waiting to happen. Yesterday I had no idea; today I just think of sXe as another foolish gaggle of losers looking for a niche in the next episode of Dawson's Creek.
