THE GIG:
Well folks, I managed to eventually get to The Ocean Club in
Hackney for our favourite artist and freinds doing some
top-class djing. He was billed as "DJ Rolfroydenard D. Jims
- Cash 'n' Carry" on Warprecords.com and thats as far as the
advertising went. Even the venue itself had only old posters
of garage events on its walls.

SADDLING UP:
So meself and my Italian chum, Guliamo ("Liam" to us irish
cunts!) made are way in and scored some nice VW's straight
away, to go with our Mc's and Mitsis. We needed 'em cos,
baby we were on NO sleep since the previous morning due to
delays from Dublin airport and diversions from Stansted and
general pissing about. ("Hello", to Scott from Devon- A
fellow braindancer who nearly missed his Swiss flight). A
shower in the local baths gave us a nice wake-up call.

Lookaround:
Now we're sorted and majorly appreciating the finery of the
surrounding femmes as well as the venue we were at. The
inside of a Borg Cube, it was, with plenty of chill out
spaces. We were 'up' already!

BUILD UP:
The Antipop consortium did their hip-hop thing and i
well-loved the non-vocal bits i must say but soon drifted
towards the bar. I then found myself dancing to some funky
techno and after an hour going in and out of focus i managed
to resolve the figure on the stage and the recognition
neurons fired.....there was Mike Dred pumping out some great
techno.....totally different from his barcelona live stuff
and his cylob supported breaks n beats this summer in
dublin. He wasn't ven billed...CLASS

......shit..lunchtime..more after....more surprises too!

jaysus i'm stuffed!

So next came the man himself and launched into relative
down-beat stuff for the first part. The old vison was acting
up again and i notice TWO of the weirdy beardies on the
stage passing records and twiddling knobs and fooling around
with real-time vocal samples over what was growing to be
intense jungle/D&B. it was none other than Luke Vibert doing
his Plug thing i suppose and leaving his Wagonchrist
textures at home. Some nutter MC dude was helping the vibes
and i got to here some vocals that didn't "mean" anything at
last. They kept this going together right through till the
end and i totally forgot i wanted to hear some "Drukqs"
tracks. There wrre only a few AFX tracks in there and, zero
Squarepusher tunes either. I didn't mind. I was fucked and
got my brain launced well into orbit. A top-notch gig and as
usual...full of the unexpected. The crowd was great
although, i must say, not as up for it as the dublin crowds
i've seen at this kinda stuff. There WAS a lot of grass
going around so the atmosphere was bound to be a tad
subdued i suppose.

Whats next? Develop the photos. Create some noise and GEt
ready for the Warp Nesh party on the 29th Dec. Oh mama!

Gimme some mo!

Anti Pop rocks!

Yeah give us some mo info.

oki from grmny on 2001-11-12 14:16 [#00050980]

that was a jummy read :-)

al>< from dublin on 2001-11-12 14:32 [#00050982]

As per usual i forget what most of the tracks actually were
but if you've heard the Sonar 2001 live stream from
joyrex.com there was and hour and a half of tracks 5/6/7
type stuff!!! INfuckingTENSE!!!
i wasn't mad about anti-pop dudes cos i'm generally not into
meaningfull vocals these days but they had visuals
comprising of the lead guys mouth in yer face due to a
mic-cam and their beats n synths were pretty nice.
Oh yeah.... Plaid played too. Very forgetful stuff. I have a
live cd of em in Rome and i saw em at SOnar. The same
fecking set each time and they tend to cut off their tracks
abruptly -> Not nice when yer buzzing. Great musicians but
no live 'oomph' or variations on their 'double figure'
theme. i DID chat up some honeys then, so thanks guys!!

i'm quitting my job today! A 9->5 computer piece of shit
with zero learned in the past year...for a sweet number that
will allow me more time to work on tunes and less on
listening to boring water-cooler talk and dealing with
moronic managers. It's lucky i can do this, i know.....Fuck
the pay decrease, i say!

Oce-anus on 2001-11-12 16:41 [#00051066]

It was Mark Bell from LFO playing all the rockin' techno not
Mike Dredd, APC had some wicked noises!

SweetStuff on 2001-11-12 16:45 [#00051070]

Mark Bell was brilliant!! before him it was a bit boring,
Anti pop were doing the solo rap thing for too long when the
beats came in it was cool though, Plaid were 'nice' but a
bit standard really. Aphex and Vibert played lot's of old
D+B plus allsorts of silly noises...

Cool nite!

al>< from dublin on 2001-11-12 16:48 [#00051073]

oops my mistake! Nice one Mark Bell....

Mike's sticking to the acid i'd say

oki from grmny on 2001-11-13 09:33 [#00051393]

al>< from dublin on 2001-11-13 10:13 [#00051400]

cheers oki.
Been to any good gigs/raves yerself?

oki from grmny on 2001-11-13 10:21 [#00051401]

well, i´m still recovering from a kick ass party on
weekend, but it was all friends djing -was great (remind the
honeys;-))!
last gig i saw was tortoise - very good, but more to chill;
very dopey (had fucking great visuals) - still waiting for
some reflex artists to visit germany ... but now is
wintertime and so i can expect some good indoor-raves around
here ...

ahh real warp fans not just blithering idiots!
i went too, it took fucking ages to get there but it was all
worth it just to hear richard d james drop "jungle classic
ganja man" and to also hear that mc scream ricky bianca
stylee into the effects box! i also went on a paranoid vibe
before i went in and had to stash my weed outside the
townhall under a cobble stone 7hrs later and it was still
there!! £3.00 a pint though shit!

al>< from dublin on 2001-11-13 11:29 [#00051421]

oki from grmny on 2001-11-13 12:40 [#00051459]
