prefuse-ish, or mpc-ish?

ok, im not attacking him at all... I love his music...

its just that I was messing around with my friends MPC, and
recorded this little ditty, that is very prefuseish

so... is it prefusish... or is it just MPCish?

His sound is so reliant on it...

can you say someone is ripping him off when they making
something similiar on the MPC?

i wouldn't say "ripping him off" maybe, quite so much as
calling it "using a sound that's worn out" or something.
some people just make a sound their own, and i guess that
would be his?

plus, certain machines and programs operate in certain ways
that almost give off the same trademarks as a musician's
style. it's easy to confuse the two.

also: just the way certain elements happen to fall together
at times reminds one of another song or artist. but it's
really not THEIRS. personal style i think is very general;
really just a feeling, when you examine someone who dips
into alot of styles.

basically, i'm saying this...

i think it's perfectly fine to do something you really like
that sounds like someone or something else, if it wasnt your
intention. if it ever IS someone's intention to do what
someone else is doing/has done, then i think they should
re-examine their motivation behind doing music.

i have an mpc and i make music which is so different to
prefuse...but with much time on mpc (editing and mixing
short samples), with same ideas it can sound so prefusey in
minutes

yes...

I didnt mean that anyone who uses it, will sound like
that...

but the fact that you can make it sound so prefusey in
mins...

MPC's are wonderful tools. no one said prefuse 73's music
was hard to make, but i would say it's pretty unique
nonetheless. he has an identifiable style that probably
can't quite be duplicated.

just so you know, most hip-hop producers use either an MPC
or an SP-1200. it makes sampling not only easy but very
creative (ie: not just looping). jay dee makes some really
wonderful music with the MPC.

Whoever created MPC (whatever that is, a software program I
assume) is the real mind to follow probably. Since computers
provide a great ability of creation with aphex-like music,
the ultimate tools are computer programs. And designing the
tools probably require more skill and thought than designing
the music, at least in computer software... maybe not in
creating a banjo or something, not that I'd really know how
myself...

yeah but mpc does only what your mind imagine, it so up to
you, more than any software or hardware...it comes without
any sound, and you have to make loops by your own...it's
just the machine which follows yr thoughts....i don't like
the idea that akai will put preset sound for the very first
time on the new, small but not battery operated mpc 1000.

hah, but all this said... im considering getting an MPC
:-P

for a different approach to making music... and for the
fucking awesome crunch it gives samples

what do you do with hardware like a mpc... you plug it into
your computer to feed it sound samples, or you record sound
into it or something?

whoa, I just got an idea... you could simulate the concept
of having 10 fingers when you use hardware into software...
by having a new type of mouse where all 10 of your fingers
controls a different mini-mouse and cursor.

theres a huge range of them... different models etc...

also, there are the older, no longer being made ones...
which some say have a nice sound...

it really depends... but id say... around 800-several
thousand... depending on the model

well only the new one which is out in november is small and
light. mine (mpc 2000) is 7 kg, and mpc 4000 is even bigger
and much better but it cots few grands...i don't want to
enter the pc/mpc battle, some nasty laptop with great
external audio card and nasty controller can come close, and
maybe win...but for me the best thing about it it's how it
fit in my bed...and 8 output channel right to the mixer is
so good....search on www.akaipro.com for the new one , it
will be able to handle with 2gb memory cards...and
that's....perfect

I wouldn't call it ripping off if you are influenced by, and
while using the same hardware, and working in a similar
style happen upon making something that sounds comparable.

I have made a few things that sound prefuse-ish, and have
not found myself ashamed for it at all.

Anyways, he is going around telling people that he is going
to change the face of hip-hop. The only way I can see this
happening is through him being ripped off by every major
producer in the industry.

And the mpc is practically a modular sampler, so you can buy
different things to upgrade it with (ie- filter, reverb,
phasing, compressor). I have heard that the cheapest of
these modules cost around $150us.
