To Napter Or Not To Napster

[REFLEX] from Canada on 2001-04-19 22:48 [#00003981]

That is The Question. Id like people to do the following
questions.

1. whats your opinion on it?
2. Hurt/help record sales?
3. What does it do for upcoming/new artists.
4. reach new people?

Let me know. As this is a big topic these days.

It hurts big time musicians because most of them only have
one song that everyone knows. So instead of buying the
whole brittany spears or eminem album, they can just
download one song. But for the musicians we are all fans
of, it definately helps. For instance, you guys let me in
on boards of canada, and plaid. I downloaded a couple of
there songs, dug them, and now im ordering 2 cds of each.

i think it depends on the user.. i have so many mp3s but i
have bought over 100 cds in the past two years (no joke)
and i may get a couple tracks from a cd, but i usually
purchase it at a point in the future..it also helps to get
stuff thats very hard to get a hold of

[REFLEX] from Canada on 2001-04-20 00:27 [#00003988]

Well i agree with both of you really. I use it to get shit I
cant normally...I have also bought many cds in the time I
have had Napster on my computer.

Ross from can. on 2001-04-20 00:53 [#00003990]

yeah, and i mean the sales on cds have went up over the past
year, so this napster taking money from cd sales stuff is
lies!

[REFLEX] from Canada on 2001-04-20 01:01 [#00003994]

Ross: yeah see thats what I though too. I think its stupid
as shit, to let the music companies "own" the music. I mean
obvioulsy they do, but they shouldn't like they are... cause
its just not fair to have them take control over the music
we listen to. It should be for everyone, i think that
eventually napster [or napster kind of programs] are going
to be the wave of the future for music listening/sampling or
what have you.. the record companies/groups that complain
are just fucking babies and won't admit/change to the ways
of the new. NAPSTER GO!

Ross from can. on 2001-04-20 01:13 [#00003995]

Yeah man..it's time we took something back..ive gave heaps
of money to record labels, hmv charges me $25 + tax for
basically anything electronic (so i go downtown and get it
if i can) i wouldve never discovered so many bands i liked
if it werent for napster..

[REFLEX] from Canada on 2001-04-20 01:18 [#00003996]

Ross: NO SHIT!.. ive been in Vancouver sooo many times. I
know what its like for that shit there. Here in Edmonton, as
you can guess its no Different. HMV charges like fucking 30
dollars sometimes for certain cds. Which is BULLSHIT!. So I
can use Napster, or go to Whyte Ave [its like "the strip"]
and I can go to places like SOnix/Blackbird and shit which
are local Cd shops.. used and new and shit. And its cheaper
there.. and you can get bootlegs too. But over all i would
have never found out about so many artists [which I have
bought cds of] that I would have normally never ever heard
in the first place!

I just think it's great there are people out there willing
to share music so people can hear what they might not be
able to if they were to the record store. It opened up
listening to BoC, Autechre, and all of you unsigned people
on aphextwin.nu... really cool stuff, all of it. If I could
all buy it on some form of recording I'd do it.

[REFLEX] from Canada on 2001-04-20 02:16 [#00004007]

Yeah exactly I know what you mean... its all true!

I say its lush to suck everyone and everything dry if your
in the position to do so. Its great to take things without
paying for them. Especially great music like The Aphex
Twin's himself. And food too. I cant remember the last
time I paid for a meal. Heck, I'm stealing my cable
connection thats allowing me to surf so radically through
the net even as I speak. And as for the bearded chipmunk
making a buck off me, my motto: "I dont give a fuck because
you dont give a shit." =>

oohhh a little bit of everything here.. Well I mean sure I
like shit to be free. and granted ive stolen in my life
before.. lots. But not anymore... and yet i don't find
NAPSTER to be stealing anyting. goddamn... I mean give me a
break. Im not going to just NOT use it becuase iam
potentionally ripping of an artist.. first off if they cared
that much they would send in their name and shit to Napster
and go through the process to make their songs unavailable..
like have you ever typed in Dr. Dre lately? [i don't like
him at all but hes soooooo popular on napster, same with
eminem] you can't find shit! and before you could find
EVERYTHING so easily. now there is nothing.. so if the
artist themself cared enough they would go through the legal
process of getting their songs off of there immediatly. If
not whatever.. Im going to get your shit for free! And
besides like Ive stated before along with many other avid
AFX fans, I buy his stuff when Its there to buy at the local
shops and such, until the cds are available in my city, and
not priced at like 45 dollars a cd, then my friends, im on
Napster. [ive bought a bunch of AFX stuff too]

I have to confess, some days a chilli dinner, an unwatched
episode of stargate sg1 and box of chocolate orange
matchmakers beats most things.
