i dunno if any of the peepz on here from Ireland or Britian
can make some comments about this....or know of this....but
i'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this movie.

i plan on watching it later this week hopefully

PLOT -

In Ireland until fairly recent times, young women could be
locked up without trail and sentenced to forced, unpaid
labor for such crimes as flirting with boy's, becomeing
pregnant out of wedlock or being raped. This film centers on
the true stories of three of them, depicting depraved
institutions administered by nuns who in some cases have
found an outlet for sadomasochism. Attacked by the Catholic
League, the film is based on FACT; cases angainst the church
have been settled for a total of millions of pounds. What is
astonishing is that such practices flourished through the
1970's and finally ceased only in 1996. A powerful
indictment, wirtten and directed by Peter Mullan.

ummm yea i figured. glad to know someone's seen it. i always
find it so surprising that these kind of things still occur
in modern times.....i mean Ireland is not 3rd world...they
have FREE newspapers, etc....

why does it take so long for these things to get out and get
dealt with?

i'm surprised....and yet i'm NOT surprised =/

i know?!?!?!? some scary a*# sh*&!

however along that same vein, i read today about a women in
Nigeria who is awaiting her sentence. Due to the Islamic
Religion....since she had a child out of wedlock (termed
adultry) she is subjected to being buried alive up to her
neck and stoned. the child is beautiful, and she's resigned
to her fate.....i hope some organization will interceed!

Movie has flaws (a bit too slow perhaps) but is a powerful
exposure of religious fanaticism and small mindedness in
oppressive backward rural communities. Good acting, ok
filming and very very bleak!

Saw this a couple of weeks ago. Its very well acted.
Apparently they had to tame it a bit so the truth is
harsher.

This si the Catholic Church for you. Not one of the better
organisations the world has ever seen and its a timely film,
what with all this Islamaphobic backlash. Christianity has
been, and still is, a bigger problem in the world today;
especially tied to neo-liberal capitalism i.e. the Bush
administration.

i'm definately gonna see it....damn machine you get some
good ones in your town!

btw.....i know it's not gonna be one of those 'feel good
movies' but it's something i think i should see to be fully
informed about what can and does still occur to women in
modern times!
