WHO IS DA IDM?!?

You guys speak of IDM a lot lately. I'm fresh to the
electronic scene, and if someone could give me a quick
overview of who IDM is, what kind of music they play, who
they are similar to, or any websites that could give info,
I'd greatly appreciate it.

By the way, I'm buying "I Care Because You Do" today, and
I'm looking foward to smoking some pot and listening to it!

:-D

IDM is a name used to refer to this type of music... it
stands for Intelligent Dance Music...

No. "Selected Ambient Works II" is what you're looking
for...

(IDM is nonsense term. Ignore it.)

the Right to Children by Boards of Canada, or Selected
Ambient Works 85-92 by Aphex Twin... or Drukqs by Aphex
Twin...

AGH TOO MENY MUSICS

I have MHTRTC by BoC...

Its funny, I never really considered the bands mentioned dby
uzim dance music at all. I just never put their music in a
club setting, because I started listening to them a year ago
(I was 15) and of course never experienced clubs or raves
before, and still haven't. I always considered club music
trance shit, that makes me want to burn my penis with cigar
butts. Personally, I think those bands are higher than just
"intelligent dance music."

And I have Go Plastic.

Nope, I don't have the Come To Daddy EP.

AM I right in thinking that "Selected Ambient Works..." is a
compilation? If so, I would rather get a regular album.

offline The_Funkmaster from St. John's (Canada) on 2003-09-14 11:09 [#00862226]

well technically I Care Because You Do is a compilation
too... SAW85-92 is a compilation obviously... but it's real
good... SAWII probably isn't a compilation, but it sucks...
just download Rhubarb, Lichen, Stone in Focus, Cliffs, and
you're set... the rest is crap imo...

no it is not.. just some tracks he made over time

saw II is great, its just what you like

imo those tracks are brilliant, ive never heared anything
like it, you just have to be in the mood for ambient

Hmm, in that case I'll go for The Richard D. James album. Is
it more hardcore or heavy D&B?

i cant say enough how much i dislike the term braindance:
i'm not interested in music that just makes my brain want to
dance

"I never really considered the bands mentioned dby uzim
dance music at all."

> me either ^^;
"intelligent dance music" is a dumb and inappropriate term.
(well, i heard Fluke was classified by some people in IDM...
maybe this band could fit the term if you want, but that's
all!)

or maybe we got it all wrong and it's purpose is entirely
ironic. (come to think of it, it can only be ironic, or at
least tongue in cheek)

i wouldn't describe RDJ album as hardcore nor heavy - it is
more cartoonish if you ask me! : )
(still being aphextwiny, of course)

Let's let HIM decide what to get.
Selected Ambient Works 85-92 - dated ambient. Lots of reverb
and subtle beats. Gets a bit boring by the end.
Selected Ambient Works - long droney ambient for two hours.
Sublime, if you like that sort of thing.
ICBYD - IDMish, slower than drill'n'bass, kind of hip-hoppy,
rather varied. Ambient moments.
RDJ album - mainly drill'n'bass. Not that varied. I hate
it.
Drukqs - elements of all of the above. Makes it vary
incohesive and doesn't flow as a whole album. Sounds more
like a compilation than any of the others. Some very
beautiful tracks, though, including a lot of piano pieces.

THERE WE GO.

I've tried to jive to the first couple of minutes of 1930.
Wasn't very easy.

no, it's not a track, it's a live album they did in 1983 or
so... it's probably my favorite cd of theirs, it's just
great...

here's a link!

check out the song 11 o'clock Tick Tock, it's not on any
other album, and it's one of their best in my opinion!
