I was recommended to make a new post out of this, and I
think I should since its quite interesting.
I'm doing some research into the whole 'braindance' thing
and was wonderiing if you'd agree that its predominantly
male dominated and if so, you think of any reasons why? I
can't really tell since I've never been to live performances
etc.

Cheers,

Ben

Well, i reckon, and don't all jump down my throat on this-
it's just my opinion, but the music is kind of cold and
calculating, the way it's made is much like constructing a
fantastic new building. The end result is beautiful but the
thinking behind it is mathmatical and practical. Male
thinking, not female. Can anyone think of some electronic
music which has female character?
This is a very interesting question you have raised and i
really think you should start a new thread on it if you want
lots of people to reply to it!

no offence guy,,,but i really dont think it should make any
difference,,,i havent heard of any except one but i think
shes more photekish,,i'm sure not what youre lookin for,,
her name is luccia or something,,,,,i dont understand why
people even comprehend the fact that something is male of
female dominated.
what difference does it make,,,please explain.....

B3n from Sheffield on 2001-11-11 20:37 [#00050645]

Eh? I don't think you understand, I'm looking to see if
there are any differences, and if so why not if it *should*.
And the rest of what you are saying, I don't have a clue...

will from trinidad on 2001-11-11 20:51 [#00050658]

really guy,,whats the difference,,,,all that matters is the
music.....
if a woman is making good music i'll listen,,,so whats the
difference,,,unless u wanna look at someone pritty ,,and if
so just look at mtv or something..
i'm just asking guy, why are you interested,,,it makes no
sence to me ,so explain,,,,,,,,i'm not tring to pic a fight
,,i just see no difference and wanna know why someone
would......

I don't care if its a guy, girl or transexual. I'm doing a
sociology paper into it, thats why I need to know peoples
opinions on it.

oh a paper,,,,,uh well u gat my opinion,,
it dosent make a difference and shouldnt

Ok then, if you think that, then where are all the females
on this board? Are they hiding? And its not about what you
think it should be like, its what it is like and why.

It's an interesting question...I agree with you, IDM does
seem to be predominately male orientated but I think the
same is true for most of the dance music sub-genres...Theres
no getting away from the fact that it's quite a "Technical"
musical form and maybe it's that side of things that makes
it appeal more to guys...

But it's tricky area and trying to decide whether it's
nature or nuture behind this sort of bias is very difficult
to work out...there are probably much wider cultural reasons
for this imbalance that go far beyond the music itself...

Have you read "Speed Tribes"? Theres some great stuff in
there about Otaku in Japan: obsessive fans (generally
male)...pop to your local lib and see if you can pick up a
copy, it might give you some ideas or potential directions
to investigate further...

Let us know how you get on...

What jand said.

Also (And I think this point has been made before) girls are
less inclined to use messageboards/the internet generally,
hence fewer people of the female persuasion here.

Also, Will: Like it or not, it's a fact that girls and
blokes are different, in terms of the mind - hence it's
quite possible that this kind of music is less appealing to
girls than to guys. I know that a higher percentage of the
blokes I know (even IRL) like Aphex Twin than the girls.

Also, elipsis marks are made with full stops, not commas.

i know mad girls that are really into aphex, and two days
ago while on the phone with my girlfriend, i heard go
plastic in the background.
