I can't wait for the Gamecube version of this game to be released in the UK. I bought a magazine today, showing the screenshots. Link from Zelda is in it....and it looks amazing!
Anyone elsewhere already got it? What's it like?

Is Link a character you have to unlock, or is he just one from which you can normally choose from?

I have it, but I haven't played it for a few weeks. It's a great game with a nice fighting engine, and fast too. I played through the Weapon Master quest-thing the first few days after I got it, but then it got a little repetitive, but only because I never played with another human. If you have someone to play it with, it would probably never get old.

I like these kind of games.....more so for the two player mode. Nothing like beating your mate up on screen

This game was awesome on the Dreamcast. Shame about the music though, the music for Soul Caliber II was dreadful; really naff orchestration.

I am really looking forwards to this. Aside from UFC, there hasn't been a decent "serious" fighting game since the first one in my opinion. Sure, SF EX and MArvel vs. Capcom 2 etc. are fun, but they're not as mind blowingly awesome as soul calibur. I have to agree with Promo, the music could be improved (even though it wouldn't fit with the romantic era theme, some rough drum and bass or some really aggro dance music would be fantastic), but other than that it's flawless. I will be getting the GC version too. Actually, I'll fire up SC1 on the DC first thing tommorow and get back into it :)

God, I think I'm just going to break down and rent it. I have NEVER enjoyed a fighting game that wasn't handdrawn 2-D, like Capcom's games, SNK for Neo Geo, etc. But you people won't shut up about this... so I'd better check it.

Honestly mate, I love 2d fighting games (I must have at least a dozen for the DC), but SC is so much better...
It's not just 2d fighting in 3d with the odd "step to the side" move that is so slow to execute it's useless (a la Tekken), the way it uses the joystick means that (just like in real martial arts) once you get good enough you don't need to block anymore- you can just deflect attackers hits by striking them perpendicular to their direction or simply sidestepping vertical or straight ahead attacks!

I played it on gc and xbox, boring and more boring. After you try out all the characters it's um boring, and boring. And if you play 1 player, it's boring. I give it a C-. Looks purty, but MEHhhhh I rather play dead or alive 3 or capcom vs snk 2

you must try it if you have an occasion... ^^
it's my favourite fighting game. the characters are also so charismatic... a boy travestite dressed as a nun who fights with yo-yos and a teddy bear, a one-eyed one-armed woman with pink hair who smokes and drinks, a random normal guy possessed by a spirit à la Sadako (Ring), a swiss dandy-style goth with a succubus, a witch-like vicious villain who got inspired by a J-pop star (Shiina Ringo) and fights with a guitar, etc.... =)
the gameplay is very good too, though some don't like it (some describe it as "at the same time tactical and primal")... you must learn how to use the psych burst bar (it is a bar that fills up but very slowly and when it is full -you start with a full one at beginning though- you can use it in case of emergency to break the opponent's combo, or as an attack but it doesn't make the opponent lose energy, it just fills your tension bar completely); the tension bar (which needs to be filled enough for some moves, 'overdrives', more powerful than others); also "roman cancels", though i never use those, they can be handy depending on your playing style: it just brings your character into normal stance in the middle of making a combo, so you can over-combo the combo (or something like that).... there are also instant kill moves, for which you need to "activate" instant kill mode by pressing the four attack buttons simulatenously (when activating, you're totally vulnerable), then you cannot use overdrives anymore since you don't have a tension bar anymore (and you can't go back to "normal" mode), but you can do the IK move (which is pretty easy to do, actually, but you can only try it once - if the opponents counters, you can't try it again). the IK moves are sometimes very cool and wacky (can be a random haiku, a yo-yo trick which shoots you into the moon, or a whole crew of pirate girls running over you stomping you to the ground, etc...) ^^

Nothing beats the King combo, nothing.
Tekken is the deepest fighter I've ever played & thats why I love it. There are hundreds of moves that they don't even include in the command list........ I played the other soul calibre games & they may look stunning & have that pick up & play goodness about them but I like something I can really sink my teath into............ you guys arn't hardcore gamers at all, your weak.........Weak I tell you.........

''the characters are also so charismatic''
Heh, heck yeah... it was fun to watch. I didn't want to play because my cousin looked really, really good at it, and I have too much pride when it comes to video games... I hate losing. I saw it for sale used downtown and I might pick it up if I can scrounge up the cash... only then, with practice, experience and discipline, can I face my cousin one on one.

i just really hate losing when i play as Baiken.
(or against Justice, a big mecha (secret character)... this one's really annoying)
i don't care that much about me at all, unless i hold a grudge against the player i'm playing against, but i like seeing the characters i like win.
