I was just wondering if other musicians here sample off of Warp and other CDs. I've been sitting here doing new percussion sets in SF for my Kurzweil and I scan my CDs for anything interesting. IMHO it's ok if it's single sounds, that are no longer near the original. I've got a couple of kits already with filtered and distorted blips and hits from my CD collection. Loops is a definite NO NO for me..besides, loops are boring as hell to fit into a track.
Anyone else?

I think it`s not right way to get samples from Warp CDs cause they`re so recognizable!

Hassle? Man, have you ever used a sampler? I had this Casio FZ-1 and sampling with that was a hassle. Now, all one has to do is pop in a CD into the PC, extract the track in soundforge and cut out the desired part. Mangle it and save.
Hassle..Pfff! :)

Most of what I do is sample-based in some form. Drums from people speaking, synths from guitar solos... it's a lot more fun than just programming synths, I find.

i sampled off cd's for one track that was all samples.. but the only techno i sampled was chemical brothers because i needed a big and ridiculous break (something from the loops of fury EP). everything else was from other, very diverse genres. pretty fun track; finished it in under an hour.

I personaly keep an ear out for sample material constantly, it's more like an obsession, if something grabs me then I take it along with the insparation it gives me & go from there, even if I take it out later. Obviously I mangle sounds but can't help being totaly inspired by old jazz & funk brakes, wierd sounds from old sci-fi movies etc.......... I suppose all those years of listening to FSOL have influenced me a great deal.

As for sounds that will be used for some kind of melody, I always make my own.

I sample a lot from cd's, although not from electronica - feels kind of incestuous.
