Rephlex Guide

Murray from England on 2001-11-11 00:14 [#00050340]

Hello all
I can safely say to all you Brain Dance fans out there, that
i know a lot about Rephlex. Let me try and give you a guide
on some of the traps that you might fall into, and how you
shouldnt hope too much. Also will be some info on Aphex
Twin.

Note: I love Brain Dance, do not acuse me of not liking it,
i make a lot of acusations that i see as a personal view or
as a universal view. Brain Dance rules.

Rule 1: A Remix can not always be a Remix
Usually when you hear the word 'remix' you usually think
that it is someone's re-making of a track, that consists of
a few samples from the original track, and then a totally
new load of sounds put into it. You think this applies to
people at Rephlex? NO! A remix could be anything from a
re-vamped version of the old song (Flicklife-Cylob remix, it
is just the same song but re-masterd with better sound
quality) to a completey different song (Come To Daddy-Mummy
mix & Little Lord Faulteroy mix, both of these have nothing
in common with the original track, they are two totally
different tracks!) A remix could just be an excuse for
putting new material out to the public!

Rule 2: The look of a 'Profesional' Rephlexer
When I say the 'profesional' Rephlexer, i mean a member of
the record label that has been on the label for a while and
has brought out a few albums/EPs off the label. Usually the
Rephlexer will have long 'hippy' like hair, a rather
unbelivebly tatty beard, a quite disturbing smile, and
usually wear clothes that are suited to them.

Rule 3: The equipment of a Rephlexer
Today, a lot of artists like to show the world what
equipment they use. This maybe because they are sponserd by
the make, or that they just want to boast what equipment
they have. It has been shown in many rephlexer's that they
seem to have the same bits of equipment (Such people like
Tom Jenkinson-Squarepusher, Richard D James-Aphex
Twin-AFX-Caustic Window-Polygon Window etc. and Luke
Vibert-Wagon Christ). All of these bits of equipment are
made by the wonderful company Roland. Almost every Rephlexer
would have these bits of equipment:
Roland SH-101 Synthesizer, with brilliant bass sounds
Roland TB-303 Bass Line, one of the most used bits of
equipment in the electronic music genre
Roland TR-606 Rythmn Composer, a piece of equipment that
makes up percussive-beats. It was dubbed the TB-303's
sidekick
And the Rephlexer might have one of these lurking about,
most likely the best analog drum machne ever created, the
beautiful Roland TR-909
Now, if anyone out there wants to become part of the Rephlex
label (lets hope you do) having these bits of kit could
prove very very helpfull for the music. All of these would
come around to the total value of £1750. So if youve got
that much money lying around, and are serious about doing
the music, then go to it.

Rule 4: Live shows are extremely rare at times
If you ever hear word about people in Rephlex playing LIVE
(not DJing, but still that is a really good event) go to it
straight away. You never know, it could be there last live
show ever. For example, Cylob (Chris Jeffs) used to quite
regularly play live, but then all of a sudden he stopped
doing it forever. So if you hear something like this, go
straight to it.

Rule 5: Aphex Twin - The man
Aphex Twin was the one who started the Rephlex label with
Grant Wilson-Claridge. He started the whole Brain Dance
revoloution, ths man is brilliant. If a new album of his
ever comes out, go to buy it. In fact, buy most of his
albums and singles. The music there is, un-describebly
brilliant. One minute you could be listening to the most
messed up drum beat and the hardest synth and bass riff
youve ever heard, then you could be listening to mellowed
ambient that lifts you off into a state of being that you
never knew exsisted.

Cheers for the Roland stuff.

The rest was pretty fucking patronising, Aphex Twin is good?

It was supposed to be a complete beginners guide you dick, I
suppose you weren't thinking straight while writing that,
because of the "problems" with your brain.

Yeah, i thought it was alright.
At last someone is expressing a few views and making a few
point. Positive. A change from slagging each other off.
(Mind you that's good fun aswell). It's only patronising if
you're in the mood to be patronised. Thanks Murray.
