my kingdom is a great track, i like what they do with their
singles, pick a theme from an album and extend it over
several parts. i particularly like the last part of my
kingdom, the upbeat bit.

well... all their releases are pretty different...

Accelorator = dancy techno type music
ISDN = downtempo trip hop (my least fav)
Lifeforms = ambient techno... chill
Dead Cities = Dark
Issness = hippy rock :-s

Issness = hippy rock :-s

Exactly. That's why I consider "The Isness" to be FSOL's
first great failure...everything that "My Kingdom" is
stretched over a ridiculous length on an album full of
over-wrought prog-rock with electronics and lyrics cheesier
than Underworld's (although Hyde's lyrics fit in the
techno-lore of Underworld's driving rhythms and
beatwork)...Hugely disappointing album...

"My Kingdom" is made even better sandwiched between two
superb supporting tracks; "Everyone in the World is Doing
Something Without Me" and "Max". Class!

I think the ep is much better, the whole idea seems to work
much better that way
and the first part is just heavenly esspecially when the
vocal sample first drops in.

Lifeforms is great. I was listening to it the other day just
reminded how fucking good F.S.O.L are or certainly were. And
yet no one really talks about them much. Its funny Aphex may
often be rated as the near damm best out there but there are
a hell of a lot of artists who are equally good.

It didn't help that they took a 6-year break between the two
albums I just talked about (which weren't helped by Garry
Cobain's health problems and extensive personal travel
schedule for personal enlightenment, either...)

A quick bump to quietly mention that the single version of
My Kingdom is by and away my favourite piece of music by
anyone, ever, ever.
The studio one really lacks something. The structre isn't as
good (when the vocal sample comes in... wow), and it lacks
the gorgeous synths of the single one.
I think the My Kingdom EP is my favourite CD ever. And the
video is my favourite video. And they're my favourite band.
Yes, I think this comes out on top of everything.

hippy rock, what an awful and off the mark description of
the isness. that makes it sound like the greatful dead or
something. i suppose spiritualized and spacemen 3 were hippy
rock too.

my kingdom is one of my favorite FSOL as well. i love the
"rachel's theme" samples from the blade runner soundtrack
and the ennio morricone samples. FSOL excel at seemless
sample interjection and utilization.

i agree, the single version is better. it feels more
complete than the album version. but the album version
works better on the album than the single version would.

i'll not go into my hatred of "the isness" as i have already
illustrated my dis-satisfaction of this abomination in
several discussions contained within the archives of this
message board.

offline purlieu from Leeds (United Kingdom) on 2003-10-17 12:53 [#00905895]

Mm, I agree. The single one sounds more epic and
freestanding than the darker album one. I once did a
MiniDisc with it in, it sounded good, but probably not as
effective. I just love the vocal sample.
Everyone In The World... is another great use of such
vocals. The lower, background vocals in that are so
beautiful, when they cut in near the end... wow.

The Isness is one of my favourite albums. ;)

what does elderberry smell like?

i love The Isness and i like Lifeforms very much. (Lifeforms
would be perfect if there was a real "ending" to
it... which it lacks - still great music though!)

Oh, yes. Lifeforms is my favourite album, but Little Brother
is such a bad ender. It just sort of... peters out.
Elaborate burn isn't much better.
Shame, the other songs are perfect.

i like elderflower... question of taste i suppose =)

i tasted elderberry syrup once and it barely has any taste
at all though, and even the little taste it had wasn't that
good. question of taste i suppose, again!

by the way anyone knows what "isness" means?

i found the definition:

"Isness: moving beyond the state of neutrality in regards
to the polarities; holding everything as equal and the same
in Consciousness."

which barely means anything to me...

i think i read somewhere else it was "the feeling before
sleeping or just after waking", but i'm not sure it was the
definition of the word!
