LFO stencils, cool! i really like the font TDR made for the
freak 12" and the album, plus mark bell's little alien guy.
you can make a cool shirt out of this.

has anyone here actually heard the album? the real thing has
been on soulseek for 2 months now but i didn't want to
download it. provided that there's a US release, i'm waiting
till i own the album before i hear it. i'm pretty excited
tho, about this and the new outkast and a perfect circle.

what are stencils?

I've had the tape for a while now but I've not opened it :)
Want to preserve the pristine condition... though I have to
resist the urge to open and wind the loose tape on the
spools each time I look at it. I hate it when tapes don't
come with those things that slip into the spool to hold it.

kids use stencils (plastic things) to draw with crayons or
pencils perfect shapes.. grown-ups use bigger stencils to
spray paint things like logos and pictures

-----------
.............
.............
.............
-----------

if you spray paint that, you'll paint a perfect square
(pretend the .'s aren't there)

That's possibly the worst square I've ever seen drawn on a
computer :)

wrong! unless someone made fakes of the EXACT same length as
the real tracks (i didn't download it but i did compare to
what i was given privately), at least some people have had
the real album for quite a while now.

so, has anyone received it?...it better be in my mail
tomorrow...OR ELSE!

it's weird how allmusic.com and bn.com (barnes & noble) have
a picture of the promotional cassette instead of the album
cover.. that's gonna throw off a lot of people and i'm sure
impact a small portion of sales

i'm gonna order it next week, bn.com are assholes about
preorder prices and they don't ship it before the day of
release.. in fact they rarely even ship it the day of or the
day after the day of release, so it's like why bother
preordering?

My pre-ordered sheathed CD arrived this morning! Hurrah! I
can finally listen to it! For those who might think that
Freak is representative of the rest of the album: it's not.
It's actually vary varied and rather nice. But: too short.

pity it's so patchy and overhyped

I'd have thought that in this day and age of advertising
fee-for-all anyone who is much swayed by hyperbole is a
little naïve.

patchy, that's how simon reynolds described 'advance' in the
one sentence he gave that album in his several pages about
LFO.. i felt that was pretty brutal. i enjoy 'advance' even
if it's not a classic; everything i've heard from 'sheath'
has been good to excellent. i think it's tough for people
whose debut was heralded as a classic; a lot of their later
work goes ignored or is instantly written off.

sure but i think it's patchy - like two differnt albums -
rather schizo and kind of old sounding - i reckon there is a
better album of tracks on tapes in the warp office or
something .
advance was pretty weak - this has some good tracks on it
but it hangs together rather badly with a few tracks you can
skip on it.
warp are overated badly anyway i think - they're glossier
and have more cash and press than other labels like leaf and
mille plateaux or whoever tho

according to the press release, 'sheath' is song-for-song a
tape a friend of mark bell's made for listening to in his
car and such.. so that could explain why it sounds aged in
spots (perhaps up to 7 years?) or like 2 different albums

i think warp are more daring than rephlex but in the end
they're both top notch labels with mega talents

nah rephlex release funk records about farting, ragga drum
and bass, noise, dancehall, music made by people with
mechanical orchestras, electroacoustic music, soundtracks
for shakespeare plays, pure acid, old acid soundtracks
breakcore madness sung by a polish man in japanese, bizarre
folk albums and bell suites i could go on - rephles are far
more exciting

warp release avant garde hip-hop, lo-fi indie rock, ambient,
acid, etc. pretty good for a so-called "idm" label. anyway
it's moot because they're about equally exciting anyway, i
just think warp's doing a decent job not portraying
themselves as a single style (like schematic and planet mu,
i would probably argue).

It rocks!!!!!....

even if it did take me ages to get the sheath off the actual
CD...

Frequencies is one of the few early WARP albums I still
listen to regularly so I've been looking forward to this for
a while...

make it a chore to open CD's.....it's like the plastic is
glued to the case......bahhhhh

First of all: Advance IS a classic! Freak is an amazingly
cool single that makes me want to go bananas on some
dancefloor. What a bomb of a party-set it would be to mix
"Freak" and "Tied up" track by track...phui!

So naturally I really look forward to hear "Sheath". Maybe
I'm just getting old but I think "Freak" renaissances that
classic techno sound without sounding dated at all. It
sounds surprisingly fresh actually!
