Small Record Labels

Hello - I've been sending this e-mail out to people who run
small labels, so am posting it here just incase it would be
of interest to anybody:

"As someone who runs a small, experimental record label
you'll be aware of the day to day difficulties of keeping up
with things in the music industry. Every day it becomes more
difficult for these kind of labels to exist - with the
competition from the "major" labels stamping others into the
ground.

It is for this reason that I'm making the suggestion that
any thought of competition be erased from the working
practices of being a small label, with in its place a
network of support between labels. It is necessary for the
survival of all small, independent record labels that we
remove the traditional market concept of competition and
replace it with recognition, support and recommendation.

Here is what I propose: a web-based directory of all
participating small labels, arranged alphabetically and by
genre. Each label listed will contain a small description of
what the label offers, what artists are featured and
URL/contact info. The directory will become a useful
resource for the survival of all labels involved.

The only thing participating labels would be required to do
is place a small banner linking to the directory on one of
the pages on their website. We will not ask you for any
money at any time and your label will remain listed
indefinitely on the directory, which should hopefully grow
and grow as more labels become involved.

If you wish to be listed on the directory please e-mail to
mukowproductions@hotmail.com the name of your label, the URL
of your site, a small description of what your label offers
and the artists involved with it, and also your label logo
in JPEG format. The directory should hopefully be online
within the next few weeks, depending on the response.

I hope you find this idea as potentially beneficial as we
do.

Thanks,

Ergo Phizmiz
MUKOW PRODUCTIONS."

wait, I don't know any non-electro fans that could even name
a label their fav. band is on.

why would labels need to band together?

Someone like Equal Vison, which is the only label I follow,
rocks me because they have good bands and they treat them
right.

The rest of the leeching labels trying to sign on the next
pop sensation can suck me off.

-------
did I rant about the wrong thing? If so, I just don't see
why any label would care what another is doing.

sounds nice.

although I don't think it would be much use to the general
public. releases by small labels are something you kind of
stumble across, more in recordstores than on the net, I
think.

really.

they are without a doubt the best band I've heard in 5
years.

Their talent is limitless. The words tell a story, and
while the live shows are hard to understand if you don't
know the words, they rock nicely.

The Second Stage Turbine Blade, their second album, is hands
down the best album I've bought in recent memory, at least
over 3 years time.

I don't mean to jack the thread either, what is it that
small labels need to band together for?

I love lots of small labels pushing out different sounds, if
they all got together, they just might all sound the same.

I don't think small labels helping to raise awareness of one
another will necessarily change the music they release.

Coheed whines more than any band I've ever heard.

I'm more into Give Up the Ghost and Bane

from doing so.

yeah, it's just a database.

It's a database wherein every label in it links to the
database, providing a reference point to find other labels
you might like.

dude you just want free advertising, get over it

Fair enough. But I've got quite a lot of response already
from other labels.

And who in the right mind in music business doesn't want
free advertising?

big labels can have as much advertising as they like
(playing the same track 50 times a day on the radio till it
drills into your fucking head) so small labels need all the
advertising they can get. this idea has already happened in
the north of england for rock bands and it's a good idea.
unite. you have a cental location to find live events in the
area and follow the bands you like. if you go out of the
house and see things rather then sit on the net 24/7
downloading mp3 files then you may dig this.

roy... get over yourself mate :>

Don't see the point of this. Some silly website ain't gonna
make jack difference. Its like so? Fat Cat already have a
site which provides support and info and its like so? Shit
if someone wants to achieve something and they're determined
enough thats all the support they need. Competition for fuck
sakes is what makes the World go round! Thats why Warp have
all the good artists and the rest scrabble around.
Competition creates innovation pushes people to come up with
novel ideas and approaches to gain market share. Or is this
what this what this is suppose to be? Besides who cares
major vs mini? Whatever.

this idea worked in the north for rock bands. compertition
will always happen but what this guy is saying is rather
then acting like no other label exists you can support each
other and spread the word. it's just like rephlex and
breakin putting a night on together or afx having a track on
a compilation so people but it for that. it's another way
for those who give a shit to find more.

Yeah I guess. Still I do hate it when people start to whine
about the big guys 'cause at one point they were small guys.

but then the big guys want to get bigger and bigger to get
more profit for the shareholders (when it gets to that point
and it always does) rather then please people. only about
four record companys run the uk charts. i guess thats not a
problem if you like the music they shit out but you don't
exactly get a lot of choice in the uk because of this. emi,
bmg and so on can afford to 'fund' the radio stations so
their shit gets plaid 50 times a day, others can't.

emi, bmg and sony rip off the artists they sign and often if
they don't shift the right amount the artists are landed in
debt. if not they get like 1% of the profit. loads of groups
fall for this shit, it's a big scam.
