dont know if you blokes across the pond got it or not, but
i just saw a mastercard commercial using "pillow" by capitol
k. even had like music video credits in the bottom left
corner that said:

capitol k
"pillow"
planet mu records

they used non-vocal portions of the song, but what the
heck... its cool just to see a great song like this one get
some play somehow. very nice. thought some of you might find
that cool.

on some national geographic special i was watching today
there was some music that was immediately recognisable
"IDM", but i couldn't quite place it...unfortunately there
were no credits at the end for me to be able to see.
*shrugs* but they use all kinds of electronic music in their
shows. it's really cool.

People have got to eat...provided they keep true to their
own sounds and don't try to commericalise it, I have decided
I don't have a problem with letting people use a tune for an
advert.

And as I have said this then the world music surely follow
my view in the future :D

I hate that 'we have to eat' excuse. If he's short of money,
why doesn't he go out and get a job?

Because being a musician is a job...even the great composers
accepted money from kings etc to create symphonies. This is
just the modern day version.

they were commisioned by people, yes. They weren't
advertising the commisioner's product.

yeah, it's cool when the music is taken up by faceless
corporations who make their money by financially crippling
millions of people.

wow. sorry, i'm just not that jaded and cynical. sheesh,
what happened to being happy that good music and art got the
exposure it deserves?

I think it deserves more than being whored to crippling
corporations. I don't believe that is a cynical attitude -
just the reverse in fact.

what the hell is wrong with being a musician and getting
your shit played?

You sellout when you change your styles for $$$$. If
McDonalds wants to use a track from a album and you say yes,
how the hell is that selling out?

It's called cashing in, you've got a sound people might
like. Yes typically this is left to the pop kids, but come
now, since when is getting your genuine music played a
sellout type of action???

You're missing the point - as soon as you put your signature
on the dotted-line, you are basically condoning that company
- you are allowing your music to REPRESENT that company -
have you not heard of having principles? They are the ones
cashing in, cashing in on your name and your reputation. It
is your reputation that changes hands.

Would you happily sell your music (if you make it -
hypothetical question) to a Credit Card company, or a Bank,
say? These are two groups who make their money by trading on
people's lives and happiness and financial security, who
happily take your money and then hit you with outrageous
fines and interest if you miss one payment. Would you really
want your name or your creation associated with companies
like that?

Ask him what? What is there to ask? If it's his music on the
Mastercard advert, it's his music. Nothing more needs to be
known.

i understand only if it is a company whose practices you
vehmently disagree with. Obviously.

I disagree with your bank statment, but that is semantics.

---------
I see if you don't agree with the company, but if they do
fine in yoru eyes, sign on the line and reap the rewards of
making music that people like to hear.

everyone stop your bickering - who is Capitol K again? And
what's Mastercard? :D

If it makes anyone feel any better, just replace the word
"Mastercard" in tibbar's first post with "Dunkin' Donuts."
I'm sure that will solve problems.

The money you take from that corporation is money they have
taken from other people - probably people who can ill-afford
it. Plus, whilst their workers, who are the backbone of
their business, slave away for shit pay, along comes Mr.
Musician and gets a nice fat cheque. Now that is not right.

Well I just emailed him - and he knows nothing about the
advert, and it was used without his knowledge. He also said
he was skint and would follow it up.

hope he didn't sign a contract which gave away such rights.
