Is anyone else here into philosophy? If so, what stuff?

im into philosophy somewhat

but i dont feel the need to go check out tons of books by
tons of differnet philosophers. its more or less just dead
ends eventually.

i couldnt name a single philosopher im into, they all sorta
contribute equally to the whole i think.

Right, but if you don't read any of it and you can't name
any philosophers, what exactly are you into?

you can still philosiphise w/o reading about it, but i would
strongly recommend you read some satre and nietche (sp)

What bored you?
I haven't read it for a while but I'm still really into it.
I love trying to work Nietzsche out. Sometimes I'm sure he
was just taking the piss.
I like more obscure stuff as well, like William Blake

what Sartre have you read? I thought Existentialism and
Humanism was incredibly hypocritical

im not too keen on humanism although i dont understand why
you think why its hypocritical. i love nausea by satre. its
his personal exploration of the world, although seen as an
essay, a great 'twist' at the end. reading/understanding
other peoples opinions of life will undoutedly make you
understand your own existance much more clearly.

offline earface from somewhere (Yugoslavia) on 2003-08-26 17:36 [#00837669]

Well, because at the beginning he bangs on alot about how
other ethical maxims are ineffecient in many practical cases
and strongly slates Kant's Categorical Imperative. He then
proposes this view of Existentialism that when we act we act
for all men, blah blah. This sounds overwhelmingly similar
to the Categorical Imperative, "act only according to the
maxim by which you can at the same time will that it should
become a universal law".
Apparently, soon after, Sartre actually that lecture himself
and became a Marxist.
I've read the beginning of Nausea and kind of forgotten
about it.

I love most of the ancient Greek philosophers like
Aristotle, Socrates, Anaxagoras, Plato etc. Most of the
stuff is well over 2000 years old but still so relevant
today. Besides them, I really like people like Rousseau,
Kant, Nitzche, but Arthur Shopenhauer is probably my
favourite. His essays are so very pessimistic, but oh so
true I think.

i have a BA in philosophy..... Theres lots more to
philosophy than opinion. there are certain deductive facts
that philosophy has solved...

in your/their opinion...

degrees are 10 a penny, although i understand how the
philosiphacal education with regards to a degree makes you
commit to one side or another. to be fair, the older you get
the more comitted you get in your beliefs

relations between space-time, anti-matter, differences
between absoulte and relative space, primary and secondary
sense functions,

no i don't really feel like it... i'm done with college
now... i just kind of read whatever now

ps. Sarte is a joke. exitenesionalism has been proven to be
false.

pss. i can't spell and don't give a damn

Eastern philosophy's always appealed to me the most.
But yeah, Western philosophy is more deductive reasoning
than straight opinion isn't it?

agreed, much of philosophy is straight logic. Early
education in a philosophy degree focuses on logical thought
and how to design concrete arguements based on fact. For
example a simple arguement would be in the form: If 'A'='B
'and 'B'='C' then 'A' must equal 'C'. the contraversy
generally stems from the validity of the facts.

but mostly i just like to smoke pot and think about stuff.

but don't believe it for a second... i'm telling you

I wish I could speak French. I love European culture. It
shames me to think of the way we (the British), and recently
the American's (who have made some atrocious comments about
European denial of the Iraq situation), discrimate against
the French and the Germans.
I fucking hate the way football hooligans, coming from here,
go off to these amazing towns and cities on the continent
and get pissed and start fights etc.

I'm really interested in qualia. I think that it's simple
arguments ("what it is like to be....." etc) give philosophy
a very humanistic, personal, even emancipatory edge. I think
it shows how philosophy differs from the sciences in as much
as it helps to undermine the dogma that science is always in
danger of becoming.

Yeah, I used to be quite pro-Communist but the more I learn
about the Bolsheviks the more I despise anything to do with
them.
However I also think that the 'commies' prejudice is a
typical deep rooted American ignorance that still hasn't
been weeded out after so many years.

well communism is a stupid ldea... everyone goes through a
phase in college where they think we should all be socialist
....but hopefully most come out of it.... i'm not trying to
preach here and i'm i come off like an asshole but i'm
really not..... but i'm I was also a history major and every
communist goverment has been a disaster for the people...

in order for communism to "work" the goverment must
force people to do shit they don't want to do.... and thats
lame ...totalianism

but yes often it's cool to sit around get stoned and
thinking about shit.
and Europe is great... i love france...

unrealistic and utopian

i think people should strive for idealism. its a target, its
not meant to be realistic.

Philosophers are meanspirited bastards. I keep asking Korben
Dallas to tell me what truth is and he refuses time and
again. Or he says it is a pickle which is clearly an
unsatisfactory response.

Speaking of Meditations, I've been meaning to read Marcus
Aurelius ever since they tossed around some of his sayings
in an episode of Law and Order.

How's that for shallow? =)
