Platoon is tops definitely but very very very close second
for me is Saving Private Ryan. I saw this over the weekend.
Why hadn't I seen it before? Awesome awesome awesome. What
an absolute adrenelin rush.

may be... anyways:

Schindler's List , definitely. a true masterpiece, that's the
word.

no war movie has ever moved me like this one. i really tend
to think that nothing ever comes close to it...

My favourite war film is probably Cross of Iron with James
Coburn.

Then The DeerHunter.

jacobs ladder. don't know if its yr typical war movie but,
won't ruin it 4 those who haven't seen it, just say its a
must watch.

Yes 'jacobs ladder' was a great movie with Tim Robbins. It
was on TV the other day. I saw it on video back in the
eighties. Very spooky and dark. It was on TV but only
realised what it was when it finished. Real shame I would
have like to have watched it again 'cause I can't remember
it too well.

yeah it is a lil confusing till you get to the end. worth

that film.

earthleakage,

Well time passes and your loose track of it. Seemed a bloody
long time ago that we got it out on video though. Still I
was close. Come on 1990 thats only one year on from 1989.

platoon is a bit cheesy for my liking. Saving private Ryan
would be a perfect film if they edited out the first and
last 10 minutes. deer hunter is good but it has that
irritating 40 minute wedding scene in it. Sigh. Once we were
soldiers is pretty cool, if you can get over mel gibson.
Apocalypse now is too long, full metal jacket is good,
havent seen hamburger hill in ages, jacobs ladder is ace
[and tim robbins' hair is hilarious] Didnt like the pianist,
that brody fucks me off no end.

I think overall i'd say saving private ryan, aphextriplet
edit

ok ill let you off this time! it is a good film though. but
is it about war? is it not about passage from one life to
the next?

isn't saving private ryan that flick with the real graphic
start as they storm normandy? if so in my eyes i think thats
the best part of the film, so realistic n that guy that is
slumped with his guts hanging out screamin for his mum.
reality of war, think its brilliant, i know a lot of people
don't want to see that but thats what happens.

Saving Private Ryan... Paths of Glory... The Deerhunter...
Schindlers List... Zulu, hah...

It would have to be DR. STRANGELOVE or: how I learned to
stop worrying and love the bomb! YAH! :D

Full Metal Jacket!

man that movie is nutty.

SPR is great in that it blew open the real horrors of war on
a grand scale.

------------
Lust: nice to see you back around here, I had wondered if
you left forever. Are you still with SpookyLuke?

hmm, tough choice...but i'd say:

apacalypse now, the original. redux is pretty lame imo, the
extra bits spoil the flow of the film.

platoon and pvt. ryan are too cheesy..."tell me i'm a good
man!"
full metal jacket is excellent and i cant believe noone
mentioned black hawk down, which is the most visceral war
film i've ever seen. its like aliens but they swapped
xenomorphs with samalis. tuff

schindler' list is a very dramatic one. only more a
documentary instead of an actual movie, me thinks...

films, more films against a backdrop of war.

Full Metal Jacket, Saving Private Ryan (much maligned, it
seems), Enemy at the Gates and Apocalypse now, but like
Danbrusca said, that one is iffy. And Hot Shots Part Deux
was pretty hilarious when I saw it 10 years ago... probably
still is.
