I never say that I listen to "intelligent dance music" (that
sound so faggot) where im at..I could get killed for that.

Exactly ! Stuff like Jeff Mills, Surgeon, Dave Clarke,
Laurent Garnier, Christian Vogel and so on isn't just dumb
dance music ! You really have to dig deep for the good
stuff. If you associate Danceble Techno with stuff like
SONIQUE, SYLVER, or whatever commerical TRANCE dreck, you'll
miss out a lot of good music ! I was just wondering why only
those WARP Artists get mentioned here !?!

I think people go to far to decide what genre of music a
certain artist is in. It's almost gone as far as saying that
each artist is it's own genre. I just like to say that I
listen to Aphex twin, a type of electronic music or System
of a down, a type of heavy metal.

Saying that though I'd class idm as something like an AI
type of music... It's like its got it's own life unlike
formulated dance music that has a basic beat with
variations... I hope you guys see where I'm coming from
here. I'm not good at making myself very clear I'm afraid.
:)

AIM - yeah, that´s it!! :-)

In Sides is the worst damn one! (Excluding Adnan's,
TGWTSIHH, and DirtyWater) NOwhere was awesome...if you can't
appreciate that shit (Way Out, IDKYP...STYLE, fucking STYLE,
geez) you don't deserve your ears. Altoghether took some
getting used to, but it's just ravi-er, I hated it at first
but got to like it. Still, though O2 is by far the best LP.
And, shit, whoever says dancing is stupid needs to quit it
with the intelligent-nerd-pose. Just because you like AFX
doesn't mean you have a higher IQ than people who rave.
Thinking that just makes you seem even more stupid.

Underwear Model on 2001-11-08 16:26 [#00049743]

Eevery type of music follows some BASIC FORMULAIC HARMONIC
RULES And it is still possible to make an Innovative track
with a 4/4 BASSDRUm.....! It depends on how the Artist uses
the Instrument ! Best example is the 303 on AFXs new tracks
!

AI = Artificial Intelligence
Artificial Intelligence = first Warp compilation album,
circa '93, including Aphex Twin (as Polygon Window) and
Autechre
AIT = arseholes in trouble
BTIREOF = boy trapped in refrigerator eats own foot
VOILA!!!

Chrispy from UK on 2001-11-08 17:00 [#00049748]

INSIDES IS THE BEST ONE!!! IMNSHO!!!

sorry... bit arrogant there... he he

Chrispy from UK on 2001-11-08 17:05 [#00049749]

Know where to run is the best ever orbital track though....
makes me feel funny.

I like dancing and I dont think the *IDM* title means that
the people who listen to it have to be intelligent. The
music is doing what it wants, thats all... A.I.M. wicked!

I love D&B BTW

2-Me0-PhNMePr2N from (((trapped in hyperspace))) on 2001-11-08 17:13 [#00049752]

Ghhheckkk. After Autechre, how can you listen to tracks like
PETROL, which try to be complicated and IDM-like but are
really just simple easily-digested radioplay material?
Orbital is good when they're A) making warm simple analog
sounds go with chilled-out rhythm sampling (like when
Adnan's starts out, Style), or, B) laying down a fast
909/808 beat with fast-as-hell samples and/or some girl
singing notes in the background (Nothing Left 1/2, Last
Thing, Tootled, Otono, Lush3, -MONDAY- possibly the best
song they ever wrote). In Sides had some good tracks, but
they've all grown old, whereas I could listen to O2 every
damn day of the week and still not get sick of it. Simple
doesn't mean dumb, and complex doesn't mean better. You
can't just narrow music down to elements like that. Its the
final product- what you hear, will hear, and will remember
hearing that makes MUSIC into musique.

hevquip from a giraffes throat on 2001-11-08 17:15 [#00049753]

idm/experimental/abstract/ambient is good electronic music.
everything else is pretty much shit because it's
predictable, easy to make, and all sounds the same. the
gayer electronic music is even worse because they all use
the same samples and sounds. i can easily make a shit
electronic music track in less than 10 minutes because it's
easy and takes no effort. idm tracks take more thought and
much longer to develop.

why do you people bother to come here and complain about
idm? "you guys think it's so much better than everything
else," no, i just think everything else sounds like shit.
don't argue with us because you'd be trying to tell us our
opinions or preferences are wrong. you're not going to
change my mind about what i like and don't like, you wanks.

2-Me0-PhNMePr2N from (((trapped in hyperspace))) on 2001-11-08 17:18 [#00049754]

Which is better- the ability to enjoy only IDM or the
ability to enjoy everything? If "everything else sounds like
shit" to you, you're missing out on everything else. Lots of
LPs sound like shit when you first hear them, the trick is
the open yourself up. Then, you can tell which music REALLY
IS shit, and which music you were just wrong about.

hevquip from a giraffes throat on 2001-11-08 17:20 [#00049755]

the ability to listen to what i like and not have to listen
to shit is what i like. don't tell me i'm wrong for not
liking shitty music.

2-Me0-PhNMePr2N from (((trapped in hyperspace))) on 2001-11-08 17:28 [#00049762]

Did I ever say that? All I said was, this- something many
people have time and time again failed to learn, and which
means you aren't taking full responsibility for your
descisions:

YOU JUST MIGHT BE WRONG!!

And, besides that, the music you like right now will get
old, trust me. Nobody ever said you should like shit, but
taking such a shortsighted-one-genre view of music is
idiocy, in the very highest sense of the word -just look up
the definition of the latin root. Obviously someone likes
this "shit", so, obviously, it must be likeable. This is
like the person who can't dance because it's not part of his
"genre", his "scene", "personal style". All of that is
absolute shite. Complete stupidity. Nothing "intelligent" or
"experimental" about it whatsoever.

hevquip from a giraffes throat on 2001-11-08 18:16 [#00049797]

i dont have a genre preference, i have a sound preference.
"idm" happens to have the sounds i like. i dont want to
listen to anything other electronic music because i dont
like the way it sounds. if something sounds good to me, i'll
listen. most other electronic does not sound good to me.
it's like drum and bass for me. i dont like the way it
sounds because all drum and bass sounds the same, but if
they didn't reuse samples all the time and didn't have the
same sounds, i'd listen to it alot more. i like squarepusher
though because while he may be considered drum and bass, he
packs alot of different sounds into his songs and changes up
patterns alot.

trance=shit
basic techno=shit

unless you're filled to the brim with e and you're sences
are so sensitive you'd climax at the sounds of draft punk
farting into a mic....

hevquip from a giraffes throat on 2001-11-08 19:23 [#00049808]

eheheh...

Narkotic from Orange County, California, USA on 2001-11-08 19:32 [#00049809]

My opinion on IDM:
Intelligent Dance Music/Braindance

It gets your brain moving, they don't mean dance in the
aspect of you going on a dance floor and losin it. When I
listen to IDM, I sit there, and let my brain dance. Thinking
music. Thats how I always looked at it. I mean what else
would intellegent dance music mean? Hence "braindance"

drugiebowzer from yes on 2001-11-08 20:13 [#00049816]

Firstly I never claimed that the artists listed were trance,
that was sarcasm..sorry you missed it:-)...secondly for as
much as so called IDM broadens peoples horizons...haha...I
think not having been enforced to endure the endless
outpourings of ignorant musically lacking turkeys we have
here....heh....if your idea of 4/4 fails to reach outside of
Sash and Technotronic then you have no grounds to argue
on..-for the idiots among us..i.e because you have no
history/understanding of the music...so calm it..and seek
other threads to spew forth crap..or maybe better yet seek
happiness:-)

hevquip from a giraffes throat on 2001-11-08 21:15 [#00049831]

haha...you're such a cunt. i was not aware that you were
such a elite musical wank. i've listened to other electronic
music and i think it sounds like shit, therefore, i dont
bother listening to it because i dont enjoy it. you say that
even though we hate it, we should listen to it. where's the
logic in that? i suppose i would listen to all the other
electronic music if it wasn't lame shite. i listen to "idm"
because it is what i like.
