Mappatazee, you could also check out some free vst plugins, there are some pretty nice ones out there.
I really like these ones myself.

Start with a tracker or something. A lot of people nowadays start with all this insane stuff and end up making medicore tunes. Basiclly when your new you dont go too far past the presets of these programs.
Ive been making computer based music for 7 years, feel free to ICQ me if you want to know anything or just want advice !

To go out and record loads of original sounds. Just walk around outside and in, listening for different sounds, hitting, rubbing, scraping, throwing anything that comes to hand.
Best place to start is with a pallette of original sounds.
