submitting your stuff to labels etc

so here's the question......when sending stuff to labels
like hymen/antzen etc etc do they care enough about music
quality to listen to a cd even if its not sent with a
photobook of press shots and a 7 page bio of accomplishments
etc? I just dont want my demo being thrown into a pile for
years, but i also dont want to annoy someone with all that
extra glitter if they feel the same way about it that i
would

i have never sent a demo with fancy crap on it.

chances are, it may help. it really depends on the label.
ive seen to a few labels over the years. ive gotten replies
back and nothing special other than the music was sent.

i doubt anyone label would take into consideration your
fancy art and biography if the music sucks or even if its
great. if the music is good, its good. it doesnt make much
of a difference when i sent things out.

best thing to do iis just make a cd with some of your best
tracks, so they can give it a short listen.

this is just my experience however, it may be different for
other people who have sent/released/whatever.

Send it in a sock or something else totally genius and
original. I'm sure they're not going to say 'WOW!! what the
fuck is this!?' when they recieve a CD with a photoshopped
cover of a moody shot of a teenager stood in a diss-used
factory...

If you want some attention, grab it!

What i mean is that.....will they even bothering listening
to a cd they get that does NOT have all that crap coming
with it? I know if the music sucks it sucks, but I didnt
know if they just assume that u dont care enough about
promoting if u send just a cdr and contact info

I knew what you meant, but a CDR and contact details or a
CDR with a biog and mug shots isn't going to get you
anywhere, niether of them.

on all cdrs ive sent over the years, it has just been track
titles, email address, cdr.

as simple as that, shouldnt have to do anything more.

so, best of luck. electronic artists dont have it easy
lately.

epsy,

They wont listen to it. I think sending stuff to labels is a
waste of time. Most labels put out stuff by friends and
people they know.

If the music is shit all the fancy artwork in the world wont
make any difference. No point sending music unless its
stands a really really serious chance of being taken
seriously. Of course so many labels have different things
there into a different times its impossible to send stuff to
right the label at the right time. BTW Rephlex and Warp
don't listen to demos period so don't waste your time unless
your the next Squarepusher that is. And I'm not talking as
someone who sends demos btw.

Electronic artists have never had it so good! No need to
save up for equipment and room to store it, 'free' Music
programs with Vst's galore, get everything ever released by
rephlex, warp toytronic etc. for free!!

small labels do listen.

you're right about the larger labels probably not listening,
seeing as they use small labels as their A&R department.

but again, the small ones do.

Hobbyist electronic musicians have certainly never had it so
good - Not so easy to do it full-time/professionally
nowadays though.
It could be that in a few years there'll be some real heavy
laws against p2p network owners etc... and everything may go
tits up - Maybe record sales in IDM (which is getting a lot
of distribution&exposure on p2p's) will go through the
roof... maybe?

"BTW Rephlex and Warp don't listen to demos period"

How do you know that?

Anyway, if this is the case why would they have a
page of demo submission guidelines? Or indeed, how dare
they?

Rekkid labels should have more scouts. Ochre not being on
lik ewarp or sumn is a criminal fucking offense.

I've kind of lost a bit of respect for these labels, coz I
mean there are some really fucking DOPE unsugned artists on
tefo and here and wattem, and IMHO a lot of the shit that
the major labels are putting out is just not up to par, esp
compared to some of these mp3kids.

loopychoon,

Duh! You gotta be pretty dumb not to realise that they
haven't released any 'new' artists for probably 3 years. All
their releases come from existing artists or other labels or
references. On top of that I don't believe that not 1 demo
after the thousands of demos received over the past couple
of years wasn't any good. Therefore it is extremely unlikely
that they don't bother listening to them. Why gonna send a
demo? Lol. You better rush down to the post office, quick,
quick, quick! Rephlex are waiting for your demo. Lol.

Ochre is ok. He is good but I don't know whether he is good
enough for Warp. Who knows. He is probably the exception out
of a lot of pretty mediocre artists.

"Duh! You gotta be pretty dumb not to realise that they

Na, I'd say YOU gotta be pretty dumb for jumping to
conclusions and flaming people instead of making your point
in a civilised manner.

"On top of that I don't believe that not 1 demo after the
thousands of demos received over the past couple
of years wasn't any good."

I agree.
However, that doesn't mean they don't listen to them
does it?
Not that I am either defending them or claiming to know what
they do or don't do.

"Therefore it is extremely unlikely
that they don't bother listening to them."

For someone who accuses other people of being dumb you
certainly have problems with your sentences :)

Try:
Therefore it is extremely unlikely
that they DO bother listening to them
Or:
Therefore it is extremely LIKELY
that they don't bother listening to them

Ok smarty pants?

"Why gonna send a demo? Lol. You better rush down to the
post office, quick,
quick, quick! Rephlex are waiting for your demo. Lol."

Ooh sarcasm.. gosh those poor people who send their demos
really should know better now that you have enlightened
them.

well obviuosly there is going to be a lot of debate on
whether or not it is worth the trouble to send stuff off to
whatever label, but the way i see it, unless you try, how
will you ever know. the price of a cdr and postage isn't
that great so i think its worth the risk of no response.

the way i see it...
most labels shop for artists, and don't really care about
demos they get.
however, it can't hurt to try.

Man I don;t care what fucking label Id get signed too, I
just want someone to put out my records. Getting paid is
ghey. If you need money join a rock band and play bars lol.

Epsy I was told that the best way to do it is to find a
distro and cut a deal with them. Save up like 2000$ press
your own records and pay some one to distro them.

Do you have a link to your stuff ?

Ha I've had offers from mp3.com.au to get on labsl and shit.
It's soo dead easy to do, just make a track and get everyone
to download it and once you're in like the top 50 or so you
just get emails "Dear artist youre in teh top 50 we want to
sign you"

They're crap labels tho so be warned. Ever seen the show
Kore? I got an email from the music promoters of that show
(ie they select tracks to be played during it). So yeah nuff
said.

If you wanna get signe don any label do that.
