Rebirth by Propellerhead/Steinberg.
Just digital replicas of 2 TB 303's, a TR 808 and a TR 909- hardware first made by Roland.
It's very minimal. You have delay, distortion and a PCF filter, but that's about it. It's still a pretty good little prog, if you can get it for free anyway.

Propellerheads Reason is crappy in a strange way, it produces weird stuff when "clipping". not nice anologue distortion.. only weird digital noise and clicks.

Cool edit has a multitrack mixer. Sound forge doesn't.
Why bother doing with two programs what one can do?

I think Reason takes the cake, you can make your own syth patches (bass, monosynth, polysynth,fx) with reasons Subtractor syth, which I think is the best part of reason. Reason comes with about two hundred syth patches for you to get started on. It is a virtual analogue synth with FM capabilities to get those weird squigy noises. You have the Redrum drum machine which can play any aiff or wav sample (snare, bass drum, piss noises, anything) with ten channels, with adjustable pitch, samplestart, bend, length, level, velocity. Programmable up to 64 steps!. The drum machine too has factory patches like dnb, techno, hardcore, witch fills the channels up with various sounding kicks, snare,fx and much more, to get you started. Easy to use sequencer. And in the sequencer you can control practically every thing. you can automate the mod weel on the subtractor syth, or the filters on the sampler, the pitch on the drum machine, the bass on channel one in the mixer, anything! You have the NN-16 Sampler which can play any sample you give it. With sampler start, velocity...... ect. ect. What is really neat is that it comes with instuments that have been sampled, so its like having a virtual syth of a REAL instument. You could even resample a sythpatch you made and bring it into the sampler and distort the sound even more. Reason has allready sampled instuments such as strings, brass, woodwind, and percusion instruments, which are availible in the sound bank disk that come with Reason when you buy it. It has ReMix which is a sixteen channel mixer with four aux(illary, not quite sure how thats spelled) inputs for the different effects - delay , foldback distortion, envolope, compressor, reverb, which can all be controlled through the sequencer. This I think is the most versitile software out right now, you can make an entire track inside reason (can be as long as you want), save it, and export it with the export function to aiff or wav. I have to admit that the sounds are really great for a software syth, but really its alot more than that, BUT.... its not all there is to producing music, as one guy said above the effects distortion I think he was talking about sound a little to scratchy or tinny, compared to an actual distortion pedal, that may be the case, but its still pretty dam good. It has a little different sound than hardware, which may be bad or good depending on what sound you want to achieve. But I dont really want to get into a hardware vs. hardware arguement I am not saying one is better then to other just saying the Reason software is pretty dam good. Once you really get the hang of it, you can do a great deal of things, ranging from classical, to hip hop to idm, anything, its a virtual studio. Try the demo. Nine out of ten stars. And I also like Recycle , but I am tired and I dont want to rant and rave on that right now, and dont forget ReBirth, I love those underground ReBirfers out there, true digital underground, its worth a look, some songs are posted on the propellerhead site.
sorry about the typo's

personally, i do not like the "virtual machine" thingies anymore, i did that in the beginning, but i like to have total control, so i just downloaded as many of these strange, weird sound producing/generating proggies as i could find, and creamed them down into patterns, finally displacing them and FXing them in a waveprog and i´ve done so ever since.
making music using only one program is, to me a bit limited and kind of dull.
but thats just me, and i might be wrong and very stupid too.
