I've got a tascam us428, it's cool 'cos you can use the faders to control things and it's really light so it's no problem carrying it around.

jesus, that's a big fucker. i was thinking in the lines of something smaller (size of a remote control?), and not a mixing table.

M-Audio Quattro, or USB Audiophile ??
There's plenty of USB boxes of this sort around, but they're the ones that spring to mind.

shit just had a look on the site and discovered this!

i went to the music shop today, and they recommended the Audiophile USB. it's about 200 $, but i guess it's worth it.

that would be the m-audio firewire 410. should be out soon. this is moot of course if your pc didn't come with a firewire connection. many don't as it still most commonly found in macs. usb audio does indeed kinda stink. maximum of four simultaneous channels for recording if your're lucky. firewire is indeed the way to go if at all possible. otherwise i would recommend the mobilepre by m-audio (2 in 2 out / both instrument and mic ins) or the m-audio quattro which is one of a very few (if not the only) interface that serves the dual purpose of being an audio and midi interface. i use a motu 828 with my g4 laptop.

Dpeneds if you want to do recording or just output or just listening... different options
The Quattro gets REALLY hot after an hour of use. I bought one recently and took it back, 250$ is too much to deal with that.
I will be buying the Echo Indigo DJ card with 2 stereo outputs as soon as it comes out in late August. They also have a single stereo output for headphone use already out and one with a stereo input and output coming out the same time as the DJ card. Uses the PCMIA, Cardbus II type I think... pretty much all laptops support it

well, mainly for listening. but i have also traktor dj studio 2, which btw is gonna be a hell of a lot more fun with a 2 output soundcard. the Mobilepre interface (m-audio) looks quite good, and the price wasn't too bad either (about 120 $).

Same thing I'm trying to do Phresch... the echo Indigo DJ card seems to be about 150$ (probably less if you haggle at a dealer) and has two stereo outputs, one specifically for headphones with a volume control on the card. Supports ASIO, perfect for dual outputs

USB should be fine if u don't need lots of audio i/o. Global Goon uses a Quattro, and seems to be happy .. as far as i recollect, with 1 in and 1 out/2 in or 2 out you can have minimum latency .. with 2 in and 2out i think it goes a bit slower (that's wrt quattro)
