this is weird, but aparently the classic Helvetica font isn't on my pc anymore.
utterly strange and frustrating.
can someone help me out to get it back?the classic one, not the 'ultra thin,etc.." stuff.

I can't seem to find it either in the fonts folder, although I can select it in applications such as Word. Odd.

i could be completely wrong but, i don't think helvetica is one of microsoft's core fonts. i think 'helvetica' is more of a macintosh font, where it's windows cousin is arial.
anywhoo... the point being that helvetica isn't free, and unless you bought some program like corel, that comes with a font package (or downloaded the font off kazaa or something) it might not've ever been on your pc.
here's a pretty neat online font previewer.
and HERE's a link to buy helvetica.

I think there's something a bit special about Helvetica. In Word it has a little printer icon next to it, and in Illustrator it has an asterisk, where all the other fonts don't. I can't select it at all in Notepad. Maybe there is the assumption that it is a printer font and hence available on the device you are printing to.

Not entirely relevant, but interesting nonetheless, here is an article on the differences between arial and helvetica

Helvetica look more boring than Arial to my eye... Much more strict.

as far as the MS WORD issue goes; it appears that word is claiming to have helvetica installed, however it is actually arial.
check it out. they are both exactly the same. so, the computer actually doesn't have helvetica installed, it just claims to and displays arial.
more as details unravel.

damn, you're right. How can MS get away with using Arial as a Helvetica replacement? They should just fess up to not having Helvetica installed.

"When Microsoft made TrueType the standard font format for Windows 3.1, they opted to go with Arial rather than Helvetica, probably because it was cheaper and they knew most people wouldn't know (or even care about) the difference."
history of arial
my guess is that microsoft is trying to have it's cake and eat it too. they put helvetica on the list, use arial instead, and hope nobody notices.
