Does anyone know of any program that can generate white noise, or can someone tell me - in a understandable manner - how to make it on my computer using only a wave-editor?

Damn! I just got a sample of some white noise.. I thought it was just like a "dampening" sound that oyu couldn't really hear, but it damn near blew my speakers!! You'll get the same noise using an electric toothbrush directly on your inner ear!

..wait.. this can't be right... It says everywhere that they use it for masking sound, but why would anyone want to mask sound with.. louder sound? I'm getting confused...

I think the masking of sound that you are refering to is known as dither. You see, when an analog signal is converted into digital information sometimes the number of bits used to store the signal can be reduced (sometimes to 8 or even four bits) to minimize the amount of memory needed for this signal. This works fine most of the time, but essentially square waves caused from analog to digital conversion are heard at very low levels (causing undesirable odd harmonics). To fix this sometimes sound engineers will introduce very low level analog noise during ADC (known as dither).

I suddenly feel smarter. I always wondered what dithering was.

Hmm.. i'm trying to make a sound that's all-consuming without being audible.. in a way. Just as if everything was quiet. Imagine a really loud and noisy song that suddenly goes into total silence.. you can't even hear yourself talk... I don't have any better way of explaining what I'm after...

Hmmmm. I like the idea, here's what i'd do: take a really quiet field recording of something then digitally amplify it so you get an odd sort of hum over the actual sound of subtle near-silence. I dunno if that's what you're after though.

maybe.. I've heard somewhere that electric fans and stuff makes such noise. I know buses do sometimes.. suddenly, you cant hear anything but a sort of loud "thumping" that isn't really a sound, but you hear nothing else...

ive got a lowercase album. its basically a recording of inaudible sounds, like an anthill or a phonebattery running empty, edited in a way to make it audible.

i think you might be looking for a "semi-sound" sensation rather than something actually heard. It's a toughie, but zeus is probably yer man for something like this.

apply a resonant lowpassfilter on the whitenoise and slowly increase the cutoff-frequency. that would create the illusion that you can't really analyse clearly what you hear while the sound is pretty loud. I don't know if this is what you mean but it's better than nothing I guess

hmm.. think I'll go with just a REALLY low pitched sinewave.. it doesn't block sound, but it gives that illusion to your ears... you also start to feel sick after listening to it for more than 10 seconds... Could be fun to blast just one sound for 6 mins at a disco somewhere...
