The Graveyard Shift

Hello, and welcome friends, to the Graveyard Shift. Take a
seat on this moss-strewn gravestone, and let us

talk awhile, of ghostly mists,
and things that drift
between the trees
like phantom seas.

Yes, let us stop awhile
and talk

hello young alex - how was your film? Ignore this spider web
hanging from my elbow - it's only there for effect, I assure
you

hello paul. nice moonlight effect you've got going here.
just enough so I can't really see your face..

the film freaked me out. but in a good way.

yes, cronenburg is an excellent director of tense,
atmospheric horror. Have you, per chance, viewed
'Sleepless', directed by Dario Argento?

paul, may I ask you something?

you're normally not around here, deep in the velvet black
arms of the night.
is sleep eluding you like a fast-walking whore? or have the
drugs not kicked in? or is it for an altogether different
reason?

you seem to have some blood next to your mouth. at least, I
believe it to be blood..

this may shock you, but.. I have never seen any or Argento's
work.
the only thing I own of his, is his cut of "Dawn of the
dead", part of the 2 disc set.

tish and pish.

It's fake, no need for worry. I am once more catsitting for
my sis-in-law and elder brother, whilst they go camping in
the vast wilderness that is Scotland.

Hence I can relax and be among my good friends here at
Xltronic !

I think you would enjoy Sleepless - it is his latest work -
and features death by Clarinet being thrust into the throat
! most beautiful !

It is is a fine film ! Thorough was my enjoyment ! Much
better than 'Phantom of the Opera', also directed by Snr
Argento !

thoroughly looking forward to viewing it, I can say.

Yes, I've heard good things about the remake, also. I like
George Clooney.

Another horror gem you must see (if you already haven't!) is
Romero's Martin. Great film!

Martin, you say? don't know that one.
let's have a look on the good old IMdb..

one of my personal favourites is still the strange Phantasm.

Ah, you're in for a treat if you've not seen 'Martin' ! A
true masterwork of the horror genre !

I wasn't too impressed with 'Phantasm' -- too much cheese,
not enough gore ! :D

looks interesting, Paul. supposedly you never know for sure
whether Martin is a vampire or not - I like that.

I was thinking about writing a script about an old man,
living alone in an old house, everything closed off. a nurse
comes by, has to take care of him and he starts to tell her
about his life. he also says he is a vampire. it would be
mostly talking though, not a lot of action, however with the
same question in the end - is he speaking the truth or not.

um..

the concept of phantasm freaked (and still freaks) me. I
love the part where the main character pops his head through
the dimensional gate and sees a glimpse of the homeplanet.
very weird.

yeh, it sounds intrigueing enough.

you're a John Carpenter fan too, aren't you?

didn't you like "They Live!" too? got to love those aliens.
and the ridiculous eternal fist fight scene.. :D
such a strange, little film.

film ! Along with 'Assault on Precinct 13' and 'Prince of

ah yes! Assault! when they kill that little girl - that
really shocked me! :)

I recently lent my Evil Dead films to a friend who hadn't
seen them before and I'm glad to say it seems to have
converted another soul to the love of mr. Bruce Campbell.

That's a fine scene in the film - complete with ice-cream
van - perhaps that is why track 2 of SAWII has such a big
effect on me - sounds like a scary ice-cream van! :D

I only saw the first Evil Dead film last year (it had been
unavailable for some reason) -- really was great - better
than #2 I thought - I even wrote a review for it on
IMDB.com, which yavo approved of ! :D

in the end I would say my favourite Carpenter-film would
have to be "dark star". I used to watch it when I was
small.

it's just so funny. and at the end, when they talk to the
frozen captain, that really hits me in the chest every time.
very moving.

(I'll have a look for that review right NOW!! :P )

The Thing - my favorite Carpenter movie, followed closely by
Prince of Darkness.

Paul, why are there two of you in the slsk aphextwin.nu
room?

And why did one of you just land on a tortoise?

m a r l o w e

Date: 4 May 2002
Summary: summary of my comments: great comments, really well
written ;)

i obtained the uncut version of this film, and i don't know
why it was remade -- the original is far superior than evil
dead II -- apart from the strange play-do effects at the
end, the effects were great for the budget - the
demon/shemp(?) makeup was very good,, the blood was not
tacky (and there was an abundance of it), and the acting
just the right tone of facetious seriousness (bruce campbell
was great as he progressed from '70s slasherflick actor to
manic overzealous demonkiller.

one of the reasons that the film is so effective is this:
even though we know that a hand is about to come through a
door, or up through the ground, Raimi hits us with it a
half-beat early, so we still jumps with surprise - he takes
our expectation and uses it against us; i think that is one
of the main reasons that this film is so well-loved

there you go..! :D

I like that "he takes our expectation and uses it against

mr. Raimi knew what he was doing, even then.

no. he made a load of small, really low-budget films with
amongst many friends, mr. Campbell.

one of them was quite a success. the next one, was not. that
one was called "It's murder!". they used a few fake wooden
beams from that film in Evil Dead 1 - they called them "It's
Murder!"-beams. :)

you should read Campbells autobio. it's pretty funny.
