Any other big Tom Waits fans here besides me and perhaps
Anus? (he's had waits in his avatar lately)

I actually first heard of Waits through his collaborations
with Primus, and then a friend gave me Blood Money because
his mom gave it to him and he didn't like it, and thought
i'd dig it. and i did.

I own Small Change, Rain Dogs, Blood Money, Alice, Mule
Variations. I also used to own Closing Time.

I just love how he mixes genres - and that voice! some
people hate it but i think that's one of the main things
that makes Waits unique.

So Waits' fans.... your fave songs?

Tom Traubert's Blues, Step Right Up, The Piano Has Been
Drinking (Not Me), Cemetery Polka, Jockey Full of Bourbon,
Big in Japan, Eyeball Kid, What's He Building, God's Away on
Business, Starving in the Belly of a Whale, A Flower's
Grave, Kommienzuspadt, Tabletop Joe

I remember the Piano Has Been Drinking. I assume, nay, hope
all his stuff ain't like that.

Sounds like Mark Lanegan if ya ask me, probably Waits was a
big influence

waits has a variety of stuff. a good portion of his pre-80's
material was piano/orchestral/jazz singer songwriting. he
still does a bit of this stuff to this day. but in the early
80's and up, starting with swordfishtrombones, he began
integrating a lot of other genres into his music, like
louisiana funeral jazz and polka. his music has since become
a palatable and unique mix of several genres.

the thing is, Waits, while growing up, would listen to what
was popular at the time in the 60s like Bob Dylan, but then
would go into his dad's room and listen to his stuff - Frank
Sinatra and mariachi bands, to name a bit. He also used to
listen to three radio stations at once.

To make his voice the way it is, he had Sinatra's voice
doctor work on his throat as he screamed into a pillow for
several years, so he could have a voice like Louis
Armstrong. Waits often compared Armstrong to a "potato from
the ground - he was that earthy."

Now that's some dedication to one's work.

therre is:

prre-Swordfishtrombones
post-Swordfishtrombones
and Alice

if you get Swordfishtrombones and like it you can grrow to
love everrything that comes afterr it.
if you get Small Change and like it you can grrow to love
everything beforre and afterr it.
if you like Alice you could grrow to like everrything else
he has done orr do what is equally as possible and hate it.

i'd get Swordfishtrombones and Small Change.

Swordfishtrombones is just awesome. And Rain Dogs, and about
a dozen others. He's eternally cool, to this day. I'm not
sure how I feel about Alice though, I had trouble getting
into it.

tom waits is one of my favourites at this moment. i've been
needing a change from pure techno-related music, and he's
one of the few that perk my ears.
on a slightly related (or possibly quite unrelated,
depending on what you think) topic, i also have been
listening to bonnie prince billy and neko case & her
boyfriends.

I know his last few albums have been great, i haven't
listened much to his older stuff. But Mule Variations and
Blood money are superb albums.

I like tom waits a lot, dont get me wrong, but a lot of his
albums sound too similar, rain dogs is similar to
swordfishtrombones in many ways, as is alice, blood money
and mule variations.
