Hot Air

1951: SUMATRAN LADIES WEARING HATS AS OUTLAWED BYGOVERNMENT

by Obeng Ungu & Jalan Buntu (with Group Uang Wayang of
Palembang)
3 inch (80mm) CD

and

DRONE HILL 225
by Richard Harrison

"[...]recorded 1997-1999 at DRONE HILL , south of a
disused caravan site ( elevation 225) and north of a sheep
wash ( elevation 238) at a point where electrified wires
descend from the hilltops and meet. Mr Harrisons recordings
made in drastically varying weather conditions and over
three years use contact mics at the meeting point of the
wires at the base of the hill. The results are near
indescribable, sometimes sounding like Alvin Lucier ,
sometimes Merzbow or the Hafler Trio and even on one track
close to being the best track that Microstoria never
made...and all of this made by the actions of the weather on
what is effectively the worlds largest Aeolian
Harp...."

..both sound fascinating.

Anyone heard any of this stuff?

Oh and some of their blurb on 1951: SUMATRAN LADIES..

"Recorded on the shores of Lake Toba, 1981, this is a CD
re-issue of an indonesian album released on Cassette Tape
only in 1982. The composers Obeng Ungu & Jalan Buntu chose
as the subject and inspiration for the music, quite tragic
and horrific events during the first few years of Indonesian
independence. The theme of the album seems to be the
tremendous struggle of enlightened and 'OPEN' culture,
engaging and absorbing outside influences, whilst being
viciously oppressed by the conservative and 'closed' culture
that holds power and wishes to keep that control at any
cost. The actual music is a scarily childish mix of
nursery-rhyme gamelan, indonesian style pop and early 80's
electronic processing and sampling. Somehow it treads a
triangular path between 23 Skidoo, Val Doonican & Harry
Partch"

Well it surprises me nobody has any interest in this great
sounding music.

I thought you people were eclectic :/

Well, I have to admit I'm most disappointed in the people on
this message board.
Not because I think this thread or I myself deserve any kind
of special treatment or so even a reply.. but obviously
because I thought Aphex Twin was reasonably intelligent
music and thus a board like this would feature some people
with interesting or eclectic enough tastes to find the above
interesting.
I was obviously wrong and should henceforth only post
"What's your fave AFX tune?" threads.
