that's funny. "beschuitjes" are traditionnally eaten in
holland with "muisjes" (little mice) when a baby is born

how about that,
to tell some more about dutch folklore (?): traditionally
speculaas is brought by "sinterklaas" from spain, where he
lives, he's our local version of santa claus, both are saint
nicolas of course. He comes on his boat with "zwarte pieten"
(black pete's) who are his moore helpers they have other
candy too like pepernoten and kruidnoten (pepper and
spice-nuts) and taai-taai or taaipoppetjes (toughtough or
tough puppets, litterary) and marsepein (sugar stuff, i
think that's more common abroad). If you've been bad you get
the "roe" (they hit you with something like a broom on your
bottom) or are taken back to spain in a sack.
