How fast can they go before they sound stupid. I think 230
is absolutely tops.

i think around the 500 marker is enough for me. onc eyou
start going higher it turns into a nice granulated tone.

500 you got to be kidding? At 500 there is no beat. It
looses any sense of beat beyond 230. Of course different
tempos mixed up is interesting.

it depends on the thing you are tempoing promo

also it doesnt necessarily have to be 4/4

no tempo is a bad tempo depending on what you do to it

it also depends on the timing you are using - a bunch of
kicks layed out at the beginning of each bar at 500 is
slower than a kick at each beat on 250

any tempo can make sense if you know what you're doing. i've
written fairly accessible material at 200.

though i agree with mr. roygbivcore, that once you break 500
it really starts to be just noises.

it is interesting however, to mix tempos together - like a
fast tempo with a slow tempo that is %50 the speed of the
fast tempo. I do that a lot - i.e. mix a 90 bpm loop with a
180 bpm loop.

On my song -evil lies hidden in the forest- i switch between
100 and 200. Sometimes 200 isn't fast enough for me.

didn't moby do something where he just let his drum machine
accelerate up to 1000bpm?

you can make a song even at over 1000 bpm, as long as you
make a decent beat at, let's say 125 bpm. just dividing.

That Moby song is called, amazingly enough, 1000. And it's
crap.

you can probably acclimatize the listeners ear to faster and
faster beats if you ascend at a graduated pace...

Stop it with the anti Moby stuff already. He's certainly
smart enough to make his money. Yes he's a sellout, but I'm
not afraid to admit I like his older stuff. It makes me feel
good, and is simple and enjoyable and catchy.
